are the m50 headphones 2.1?

Nothing is gonna beat an actual sound card in your system with a good 5.1-7.1 surround setup. Might have to agree with Grief on this one, mainly cause I have never used them. I would do some research before you end up getting a USB card if that is your choice.

There are only 2 drivers. They do virtual surround sound though, which works perfect.

They are closed and bass heavy, you can also get the a700's which are the closed version of the ad700's, but at that point I would go m50 as well.

What kind of system are you running that there are no slots available?

Techno but harder kicks to me sounds like you would prefer a closed headphone for the tighter bass. Problem with closed cans is they don't have as much soundstage as an open headphone, which is preferable for gaming purposes.

Taking that + you said you were open to a headphone plus mic solution into consideration I'll suggest taking a look at Ultrasone. They are closed, have great tight bass, S-logic gives them some soundstage, plus they are made in Germany so they might not take as much of a price hike for you as getting something made in Japan etc... Look for either the HiFi 580 or Pro 550. I just got their big brother the Pro 900 and love them and I have read alot of good things about both the 580 and 550. 580 is a little easier to push and has a bit more bass out of the box, while the 550 has a little bigger soundstage and really comes into it's own when amped from what I have read.

As far as soundcards go.. I'd bet you have a slot open but just didn't get it in the pic. They can be kind of hard to see under the video card and empty like that. Just take a peak nice and low.

Pic of the different PCI/PCI-E slots

3 different kinds. Small dark blue ones are PCI-E X1. The dark blue, white and black larger ones are PCI-E X 16 slots and the lighter blue are PCI. Yours will probably be different colors and you might only have one but those are what to look for as you can stick a soundcard in any of them.

As far as mic goes just go with what strikes your fancy. I just use a cheap Zalman Zm-Mic1 that is made to "clip" to the cable of my headphones. It works pretty good for a $10 mic. Some people prefer a desktop mic and I myself hope to upgrade to an Audix desktop condenser mic later on but that's a lot more money.

Only problem with that is it looks like he has a generic mobo from a pre-built computer. They aren't usually built like aftermarket mobos, I have seen some only offer slots for what was intended to be put into the system in the first place.

But you probably do have another slot under that card, I would hope that vendors haven't gotten so close ended nowadays to block people from upgrades like they have in the past.
