From what I've seen of the other low voltage dimms its the opposite, they have less oc potential than 1.65v dimms.

I was going to grab a low voltage 2x4gb kit but every review I saw said at 1.5v they dropped cas 1 point and gained no MHz. So 8-9-9-24 @ 1600MHz 1.5v = lol.

Technically those are VLP - Very Low Profile. The memory everyone is used to seeing is actually what was classified as Low Profile.

Welcome to the wacky world of memory standards!

So in Mushkin terms, would Silverline be VLP, FrostByte be LP and Ridgeback be normal profile?

That begs the question, I don't think I've ever seen "normal profile". Would "normal profile" be laptop memory?

Well, the profile actually refers to the height of the module, and not the heatsink. It's actually something defined by JEDEC - the nice folks that make sure all your memory is standardized.

Nosir. This is a DIMM-specific thing. A laptop module's technical term is SO-DIMM (Small Outline DIMM).

For a DIMM, there are three profiles.

VLP: Link (couldn't find one on my site)
Low-Profile: Link(couldn't find one on my site)
Standard Profile: Link (again, couldn't find one on my site. I don't think linking these breaks any rules but if it does, just let me know).

Really, the "Standard Profile" hasn't been used since DDR1 that I know of. We get some through the warehouse every now and again. VLP is mostly used in servers where airflow over the memory can be an issue with Low Profile memory. I'm not really sure why Kingston/Samsung/Etc... build VLP desktop memory, but it may be that they just got a really good deal on the VLP PCB or had overstock and built on that.

Using a VLP PCB limits your options as far as what chips you can build the module with, as only certain package sizes will fit on it. Same reason why back in the DDR1 days it was "Standard Profile" vs Low Profile. Eventually the chips got smaller and "Low" became the new standard.

One of these days I'll leg-tackle our engineering guys and make them write an article called "Everything you never wanted to know about memory and were too afraid to ask".

I thought I knew a lot about components, then I started working here.

There's no point in running that low if you can get better performance at 1.35v

The amount of heat/power consumption is absolutely negligible
