PowerMacG5 Liquid Cooling Nightmare!

Thread Starter
So my graphic designer said she was having some issues with her old workstation where it was locking up and shutting off randomly. I came to realize it was overheating. I figured I would open it up, blow the dust out and she would be good to go...boy was I wrong.

I opened it up, only to find this ghetto water cooling system installed...apparently by the factory! I looked around the CPUs and saw all this crusty salt stuff everywhere as well as on the bottom of the case. The thing was out of liquid. I found out this is a very common issue and luckily this guy put together a repair guide:

http://karnsonline.gotdns.com/repo.k...CSoverhaul.pdf

So after a week of waiting for parts and 5 hours of my labor/testing, it's all back together.

I have a newfound hatred of all things Apple.

Yep, they only sold this model for a very, very short time due to all the issues with the coolant leaks.

More impressive is that it lasted ~5 years without anyone ever knowing it was water cooled, or had it opened for maintenance.

Kind of cool to see! Hate Apple crap too for the most part (mostly that steaming pile of OSX), but I have to admit some of their hardware platforms are well thought out and innovative for their time - too bad they didn't fix the issue rather than scrapping it all together.

I'll admit that the quality of the case and the way it was laid out was very impressive. The quality of this LCS was epic fail though.

I find it impressive that they actually tried to do it off the shelf.

I constantly get emails for replacement DDC pumps for the G5 DDC-1 pumps. The saline coolant solution is a novel idea, BUT once the coolant leaks to the air, it's very corrosive.

It's best to flush the loop totally to rid of the evil coolant, replace all tubing and replace the pump too. This way, no contamination of the saline coolant would mess up the rebuild.

As for a replacement coolant, 33% Sierra PG coolant straight green to 66% distilled water. The LCS is a mixed metal system. In the past, I've helped others make their LCS units all copper to run 10%/90% solution. The PG glycol is needed to help lubricate the pump in the loop and metal to metal protection.

The Delphi LCS is a marvel in itself.
