Wireless Modem + Wireless Router?

Thread Starter
I currently have the "wireless gateway" provided by AT&T... to be quite honest the wi-fi is terrible, but anyone downstairs can enjoy it.

I plan on buying the D-Link DIR-655 so I can use the wireless N.

Does anyone know if I can have the DIR-655 broadcast ONLY N-wireless so that I will be the only one using it? Also, will both the "wireless gateway" and router pump out wireless signal unless I turn one of the wireless signals off?

I'm asking because I plan on setting the "wireless gateway" to b/g only, and setting the DIR-655 to N so I can be the only one using it.

What type of equipment did AT&T provide you with? Is it a 2wire or Netopia wireless modem/router?

If so, you will need to bridge it if you are going to set another router behind it. If you put 2 routers on the same network, they both want to play boss, and confusion will ensue.

If you want to be the only one using the wireless, you can just set up the security so no one else uses it. Or you could get a dual band router. Set up the 2.4GHz band as one SSID and let the others log into it, then keep the 5GHz for yourself.

Just my 2c worth...hope it helps,

Rich

You could easily hang it off of your network as an AP, simply connect the new device to the network using the LAN ports.

For initial configuration you would want to disable DHCP and assign a static LAN IP address for your device outside of the DHCP assignable range of the current router.
