Xbox 360 controller drivers bugged?

Hello OCN.

So today I got my wired Microsoft Xbox 360 controller, as well I got my DiRT 3. I bought the controller primarily for this game, in order to avoid to have to buy any more consoles. But when I accelerated in the game, the picture got stuck. When I then closed it, I couldn't close it completely (2 instances of the game were still running, and couldn't be closed in the ctrl-shift-tab control). So i had to restart every time I tried something new to fix the game.

I tried to find the reason and found out that there are (or were, not sure - http://community.codemasters.com/forum/dirt-3-tech-support-1414/466758-dx-11-crash-reporting-thread.html#post7102296 ?). But nothing helped, and found out that I could use keyboard as well as a PS3 controller (unofficially supported, which sucks). Found this http://community.codemasters.com/forum/dirt-3-tech-support-1414/465908-360-controller-crashes-dirt-3-pc.html - note the last post. Tried later in Crysis to use the controller, also there it got stuck as soon as I press any buttons during gameplay. And also here it was pretty difficult (though didn't have to restart).

Also when I restarted, it also just got stuck at the "Shutting down the computer" - so used the reset button on my case instead. And when I did that the Safe Mode didn't appear as it usually do when I not use the Start button to shut it down.

Anyone else have experienced this?

P.S. Also wondered about the blinking on the Guide (X) button. http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-1812555.html
As some point that may also be drivers.

Edit: Also note that I have earlier been able to exit DiRT 3 normally on a borrowed copy. As well I been able to in Crysis.

Edit: Also I'm using the wired controller, if anyone is in doubt.

Try uninstalling the drivers through the device manager(right click on "my computer" then go to "manage"), un-plug controller, restart computer. Plug in controller, drivers should install.

EDIT: just plugging the controller in should work, I know on XP this wasn't the case.

First just plugged it in, didn't work. Then installed drivers (those form website) while it still was plugged in, didn't work. Then uninstall drivers, plug out, install drivers again and plug in again - same result.

Still blinking, and DiRT 3 is still not working. But Crysis didn't bugged, and said it recognized my controller before entering menu - so progress after all. Thanks for the tip:)

So let me get this straight, the controller continuously blinks, the game will freeze/crash/restart if you attempt you use the controller?

Try playing the game without the controller plugged in, then after you get into a game, plug it in, set up the controls and see if it freezes.

Also, you're using the drivers Windows installs automatically? Or did you download them manually off the internet or did you let Windows Update download and install the drivers?

EDIT: Try using different USB slots as well, maybe there's a problem with one of your USB slots.

Yes. It blinks as soon as it got the drivers (those it automatically install, when it get plugged in) installed.

I can perfectly play with my keyboard. And found out that if I plug out my controller of the USB port, I can play and exit as usual. But when I plug it in again and try to accelerate forward or backward it freeze again.

I tried both with and without the drivers from Microsoft's website. No difference in DiRT 3, but Crysis works only with drivers from Microsoft installed.

I've been following Microsoft's guide to how to determine whether the controller is defect or not, which includes trying another USB port. Also it works fine when I'm connecting to my Xbox 360.

But are there really no people who use the controller? I mean even for other games? If you have, please tell if you now or before have experienced this kind of stuff (or similar), as I would really like to know if it may get fixed or my controller is dead.
