Few questions for my Minecraft server.

Thread Starter
Just wondering about a few questions. I'm trying to make it 50 people max while being stable and no lag. Btw if anyone is interested we could use a few admins so just ask

1. Is my internet fine? It's FIOS with 25mb download and 5mb. I can upgrade to 25/25 if needed.

2. Does my GPU effect the performance of my server at all? Right now it has a ATI 4350 but I can upgrade it to a 5770 if that helps at all.

3. Would an SSD help at all? I have 1 Intel 320 SSD just boxed up not being used. I would use it in this server or my GFs netbook depending on if it will benefit the server. I already have 12gb of RAM. Right now it's setup with RAMDisk but it doesn't seem to help.

Basic specs of my server.
i7 920
12gb RAM
500gb HDD (7200rpm)
Windows 7

These are my thoughts, I couldn't find exact terraria server specs

1. You may need to upgrade your internet to accommodate 50 people. Download speeds don't matter as much as upload. At 5Mb/s spread across 50 people that's 100 Kb/s may not be enough to send all of terraria's data(I don't know exactly how much it sends)

2. GPU shouldn't make much of a difference. Terraria isn't exactly intensive.

3. SSD may provide some load speed increase, but probably not a lot considering you can only send 5Mb/s over your internet.

the i7 920 is overkill, that I know so you should basic specs should be more than enough for terraria.

Thanks. I'll probably go ahead and upgrade to the better upload speeds. I know the i7 is overkill but I might as well use it since it was only sitting in my closet anyways

Ya for some reason I was thinking Terraria at the time from looking at another thread... My mistake

Most of my comments still apply since they are similar.

OP : Check this link http://canihostaminecraftserver.com/
It suggests upgrading your internet speed to accommodate the 50 users.

He said minecraft, not terraria
Also, I would not expect 50 people at first, so it won't even matter. I would say cap it at 25, because that would probably work for very little lag. Then, if there is a need to, you ca raise the cap. You might want better upload speeds for 25+ people. Gpu would not affect your server at all, that one is fine. SSD is unnecesary.

As others have said, you will most likely need to upgrade your internet if you plan on getting that number of people. Even 25 may be a bit much but it would be doable if the map is smaller. Don't worry about a graphics card or SSD. I run a Minecraft server straight from a CLI Ubuntu box, so no major GUI to worry about. You have plenty of processing power and RAM so I think you should be good to go

Thanks for clearing things up for my guys. I'll just plan on going with the internet upgrade and probably small things like better case/fans

You also might need to get business internet. It's just something you pay extra for but you have options like static IP's and the ability to legally host servers on your connection. Residential connections typically do not allow you to do this and if you're caught they'll just turn you off.

I'm running a small vm of MineOS and it can handle 5 people easily on only 2mb/s upload. You should definitely check out MineOS if you don't know about it. Easy to learn and very reliable.
