if you aren't at 100%gpu you can start pumping up the graphics/AA to compensate until you upgrade your cpu

The GPU isn't a bottleneck in that situation, no. The CPU will be able to run at full speed, and the GPU will run at full speed. You are getting the maximum performance from both, as such.....no bottleneck.

Just like my laptop. In your situation, my GF6150 is my bottleneck. However, its getting full usage, as is my CPU. So in reality, I'm getting the maximum performance I can from it.

The term bottleneck is thrown around so much its not even funny. I use it from time to time too, but I only use it when its obvious. Xeb's system is in fact CPU bottlenecked slightly. But its only going to be apparent on CPU intensive games. As such, its honestly a pretty well balanced system, unless its a CPU intensive situation at hand.

Still not a bottleneck. He could lower the res and get better FPS.

That's actually where its obvious. When the framerate doesn't change at all by going with a lower resolution, its an obvious CPU bottleneck. GTA IV is a very solid example of this.

A lot of people seem to think that a higher res means less stress on the CPU. When in fact, that's actually false. The CPU load is going to be the same, regardless of resolution. The CPU is there for instructions to the GPU, and physics effects usually. If its holding back at a higher resolution, it likely will be at a lower one too.

From my standpoint I see none as all the tests I do don't indicate anything.

During 3dmark 11, GPU loads at 99% and CPU also loads at 99%
My FSB is 465x8 and I am running 3.72GHz on my CPU (which BTW, my CPU is on par with a Phenom II, just slightly slower).

GPU is at 1030 core 2290 memory.

He is saying I am bottlenecking in BC2 which I am not. i get well over 60FPS even at 1080P with 2 AA and 2AF enabled. I have HBOA or whatever disabled and vsync disabled as well. GPU load is constant. Not 99% but it is constant about 60-70% and doesn't dip much.

Thoughts?

if you add more and more AA at the same res and still have the same/similar frame rate then your q6600 is clearly holding you back

Or your GPU is just that awesome. I can go from 0x-4x, see literally no difference. 4x - 16xQCSAA, there's a difference but its very VERY minor (like 5 FPS at most). (This is with my main rig with an i5 2500k and GTX580).

So the above statement can be true, but it depends on the GPU setup.

yup the cpu is the bottleneck here. I had the same thing happen to me. When I had an 8500 @ 4.0 ghz my gtx 480 usage was 30-60%. Even with my i7-920 at stock the gpu was usage was jumping from 50-80%. Once I overclocked the i7-920 to 3.6 ghz the gpu usage was 99% at all times. all this was on BFBC2.

I always want to see my gpu at 100 usage. once my i7-920 limits me, that's when you know its time to upgrade cpu. good luck

you can never have complete balance in every single game though... and here it's obvious that the guys cpu is holding him back from getting more FPS (call it a bottleneck, call it whatever you want, but the fact is he needs to overclock/get a better cpu to get more performance out of his card)

to get a "balanced" system, your cpu should be at 100% whilst your graphics card should be at 100%, but here its not the case... his gpu isn't at maximum so he can pump his resolution/graphics up for the SAME fps

The IMC is already factored in. Clock for clock (meaning core/thread count differences aside), at the same clock speed, a Core 2 will generally be faster than a Phenom II.

That's from this thread.

http://www.overclock.net/hardware-ne...tout-16-a.html

A Phenom II about equals but is slightly slower than Conroe/Kentsfield which is around par but is a little more slower yet than Wolfdale/Yorkfield. It depends on the exact CPU and situation, but I was just correcting him. I'd hold his CPU at 3.72GHz slightly (but not much) ahead of any given Phenom II also at 3.72GHz in general, and many benchmarks and performance numbers reflect this.
Now I feel saddened
Well , rep for a nice comeback !

Hmm.. I feel cheated.. but AMD over Intel any given day I'd just do my bit to keep the market going

Wolfdale sure was epic..

Well..

The only point I really stand behind is that the CPU CAN be a bottleneck even if the utilization is not 99% ..

Now that that's clear..

A GPU bottleneck is when GPU is high and CPU is low, and a CPU bottleneck is when GPU is high and CPU is low
