its worth paying extra for 780s or 550s 580s are ok?
The 780s are hard to drive, and you would need a decent amp for it. So if its 780s then add another $80-$100 for an amp.

i have a pioneer a101 and i can get better ones for short amounts of time

Well all I can say is that the HFI 780 sound better than HFI 580. They both sound good however, and I guess its up to you to decide whether you want the best sound or the best value.

but maby the sound isnt that much noticiable idk... thought i think both will be good headphones
post #16 of 31
Well after more research, the sound differences aren't as great as I had thought. 780 has cleaner bass and better treble. 780 really isn't an upgrade, just a different sounding headphone of similar quality. Prob not worth the $100 price increase.

Actually your wrong, the HFI-780s are not hard to driven, in fact they easy to be driven. They will work perfectly fine without a amp. But there bass does improve from a amp. I used to own a pair of Ultrasone HFI-780 my self and they worked great without a amp. I did use them with a Desktop amp and their bass improved.

The more important then that ultrasones req 200-300 hours of burn in to open up. But they do not req you to plug them into a amp to get the most of them. They far from being hard to drive. I used them with a Xonar HDAV1.3 , I know the bass improve from a amp from using them with a Auzentech bravura hp amp out but before that a Qinpu Q1 amp. The only few ultrasones in the line needs a amp to get the most out of them but HFI-780 isnt one of them.

The ultrasone HFi-780 works great for gaming which what I used them for, but they also great if your a basshead and listen to techno and want that bass. There sound stage is not as big as AD700 but they have good sound imaging from their drivers being pointed up. As the sound bounces into your ears.

The pads are pleather if you have small ears they will not bother your ears but if you have big ears they may. You can replace the HFI-780 ear pads with DT350 pads if i recall which will fit on them without any modes.

You can rip the ear padding with your nails if your not careful. You can take the ear pads off by twisting them if you do deside to change the ear pads to DT350 ear pads or to clean them.

Also you may wanna mod a headband pad to the top since they will leave a dent in the top of your head. thats the con of the pleather pads thats on the HFI models. While the Pro650 and up uses leather and velvet pads.

For the best bass, Sony MDR-XB700s, Best headphones I've ever used. Freq. range of 3-28000hz, better than sennheisers, only about 80$ on amazon, and better sounding than any bose headphones. Also better bass than beats by dr. dre and no distortion.
