Assuming no one other than you knows the password that is a lot of work and planning. Someone like that is just going to forget to turn off the machine afterwards leaving behind some obvious evidence?

Or clear CMOS. biggrin.gif

It's easy to clear the password but the point is how would you know what to set it back to after clearing it? It sounded like the password was still there when the OP checked.

Um, there are backdoor passwords to boot past the BIOS.

Yeah I'd say this, every BIOS default I've ever seen has it set that the machine will power on after a power outage. I personally don't like that so I disable it.

What in the world makes you jump to this conclusion first?

If your still paranoid by it get a spy camera or wireless webcam of some sort and set it up in a discrete location.

If there was sensitive data they were after, they would have probably stolen the hdd(s) to crack at their leisure. If it was the computer they were after, the entire thing would be gone. If they just wanted to get online, why did they commit a felony offence when wifi hotspots and the local library have free internet access?

Unless you can recreate the screen you saw after coming home by trying to guess the password too many times and/or circumvent the protection, it sounds to me like a shutdown glitch or unstable overclock.

To top it all off, there were no signs of forced entry and nothing in all of your logs. I think you are letting your imagination get the better of you.

Paranoia, paranoia, every body is coming to get me!

More then likely an accident or a small power outage.

Also a likely scenario! Picture this if you will; WoW addict, school kid, all jittery from withdrawals just minutes after leaving the house.
He needs a fix! And your machine in the closest thing!
But alas! It's password protected! He goes to school and beats up his girlfriend.

Digital crack. It ruins lives!
Remember, kids. Just say CTRL-F4 to drugs!
