Just tried out friend's i5 2500k @ 4.5ghz..

Thread Starter
I have an i3 2100 and since I had to rma my mobo my friend was nice enough to let me borrow his gigabyte mobo and his i5 2500k.

The only games I really play are WoW, LoL, TF2, SC2, and games like ME2, DA2, etc. I will be playing SW:TOR when its out.

On my i3 2100 I usually get 60 fps all around, the lowest I've ever dropped to was like 40 fps during a heavy aoe fight in WoW. LoL, Sc2, ME2, etc mostly stay at 50+ fps (60 fps like 90% of the time).

So......

On the i5 I was getting 60 fps all around, and I did BH weekly for fun on 25m and I the lowest fps I saw was 58... and on my i3 lowest I ever saw was like 45.

Is this normal? Also do you think the price of an i5 2500k will drop around xmas time or by next summer? Will i5 2500k even be made by that time or do they stop making a CPU after some time?

I want i5 2500k

I need to buy textbooks (500 bucks) and a laptop (400 bucks) for junior year of college.

While I can afford i5 2500k @ 215 bucks (not sure if anyone will buy the i3 =/ I have original box and cooler but I've used it so idk =/) I just don't want to add another 215 dollars to my expenses. That's why I'm wondering if CPU prices go down with time, and how long a CPU is kept on shelf for sale.

A 2500K is $175 or something at Microcenter and Fry's.

60 fps - 90% of time is impressive for a core i3 2100 at stock speed. If 60fps is all you want, then I dont see a strong need to upgrade.

You should save your money for more important college stuff. Or buy something which will give you much increased gaming enjoyment, such as a quality monitor or quality speakers/headphones or sound card. I recently upgraded my audio from Logitech desktop speakers to sound card + high quality headphones. Much better upgrade, in my opinion, than spending $200 on a cpu for 10% of the time when you cant reach 60fps. At least, try to sell your core i3 before buying the 2500k. If you cant sell it at a decent price, then just keep the core i3.

The 2500k is ur best boost atm. Combine it with a new GPU is poss, that will boost fps more.

Edit: But a 2500k will make a hell of a lot more difference than getting say a 6970.

For those games, I'd stick with the rig you've got, it's more than enough. Save the money for when u actually need a new rig in the future, possibly for Ivy/Kepler or something.
