3D 120hz monitors for Nvidia 3D Surround?

Thread Starter
I know there are already threads put there with this same thing, but most of the replies I've read were just stupid opinions. But here it goes. I am looking for 3 3D surround monitors for Nvidia 3D Surround. Now, there are two monitors I am having a hard time choosing between and I want some good, honest, an informational opinions from you.

The two monitors are the Asus VG236H and the Alienware Optx AW2310.

Now,what I'm looking for is opinions that will sway me in the direction of whichever monitor, but I want reasons as to why I should go with either monitor, instead of fan boys just saying, " it's Alienware, get the Alienware!"
I mean,really?

So,honestly, I need some help in which monitor I should go with. I've looked at tests conducted with both, and yes I'm still debating on which to get. I look for colors and quality most of all out of anything else.
I've never used the ASUS 120Hz monitor before, so I can't say much about that, but I currently own the Optx AW2310. I have to say that I am VERY satisfied with it. It's very solidly built, especially compared to my 24" ASUS monitor (60 Hz) which felt somewhat cheap. Picture and color quality are definitely good and having the touch-sensitive buttons is really cool

My only complaint would be that the USB ports that are built into the monitor are on the back-side of the monitor, next to the DVI port, rather than being somewhere more accessible. This, however isn't really much of a flaw rather than a preference.

Hi,
I know nothing of these monitors so i can't suggest either.
But i can suggest this http://3dvision-blog.com/the-acer-hn...ing-to-appear/

It comes with 120hz and nvidia 3d vision glasses but then it allso has hdmi 1.4 and a passive screen for use with iz3d/tridef, this is a major win win as when games do'nt work with 3d vision you could swap the glasses and try with iz3d or tridef.

I'm just going to say this: GET A MONITOR WITH HDMI 1.4a SUPPORT! This enables you to use ANY 3D platform and NOT JUST NVIDIA'S! Nvidia's system came out before HDMI 1.4a spec was released and had to use dual link DVI connectors - thus making the entire Nvidia 3D platform completely proprietary forcing you to use Nvidia's IR transmitter and glasses.

Now with HDMI 1.4a you can use any any platform. This is why Nvidia came out with "3D TV Play". Nvidia realized that the HDMI 1.4a spec would start to eat away at the proprietary nature of their ecosystem so they did something about it starting with Fermi. All Fermi cards support HDMI 1.4a coupled with that and Nvidia's 3D TV Play system you can use any glasses that came with your TV since it uses the industry standard.

Plus if you get a 1.4a spec monitor not only can you use it for your PC stuff, be it through Nvidia, or even ATI and a few non gpu maker made setups, you can also use it with a PS3.

There are 2 monitors on Newegg that support HDMI 1.4a they are both Acers, one is a 27 inch and I believe the other is 23 inches. More monitor manufacturers are coming out with HDMI 1.4a specced monitors.

Bottom line either get one of the Acers both of which have been reviewed very highly or hold out longer until more come out. DO NOT SETTLE for a DVI dual link option!

Edit: HDMI dual link 120hz monitors are still awesome if you are not going to go 3D and just want the extra FPS/Refresh rate. 120hz can support up to 120FPS with no taring. Bringing back CRT quality with motion.

If you know you are going to just use nvidia's ecosystem, then by all means get a 120hz dual link dvi monitor. But do know you will not be able to use it for other 3D platforms, like the PS3 and such. This is why Cyberlinks PowerDVD 11 comes with several 3D platform options. Also note: AMD uses the industry standard 1.4a 3D spec and do not have their own platform like Nvidia does.

Thanks for the replies. For CyrilMak, I will be using Nvidias 3D vision and ONLY that for my PC. I don't have a PS3, but I do have a 360, so 3D on my console isn't a factor right now. But, yes Nvidia 3D surround only. I'm looking at wether to get these monitors because it would be for my gaming/daily use computer. Wether it has the HDMI support or not, I don't care all that much for. I'm looking for 120hz monitors that can do Nvidia 3D Surround( granted the cards I will be using are the MSI GTX 580 Lightning Extremes),and can do well in 2D mode too.

Being a user of stereoscopic 3d i can say that 3d vision is'nt the be all end all as most the time the games do'nt work in 3d for months after release, this is'nt true of all games but i do find that tridef usually has a better 3d success rate than 3d vision, imagine the game does'nt work, your stuck untill it's fixed but with a hdmi 1.4 true 120hz monitor you could most likely try tridef/iz3d and the game would work there and then and not months down the line.
I use 3dvision, tridef and iz3d on a 47" 3d lg passive 3dtv

I see you want 3d surround, that would be alot more cheaper with the monitors your asking about.

So,what your saying is that the monitors would work with Nvidia 3D if the game is compatible, but if it's not, you can always use the second option of tridef. Am I correct? I guess what I'm saying is that you can use both 3D vision AND tridef on them?

Yes,
if the games work with 3dvision your ok but if they do'nt you can remove the 3dvision glasses and put on your polerized glasses and try iz3d or tridef, this then gives you options for the only 3 gaming stereoscopic softwares available instead of just the 1 ( 3dvision ).
These 3dvision 120hz/hdmi 1.4 come with a 3dvision ir for thier glasses and polerized for tridef/iz3d/3d films.
You won't be stuck with hdmi 1.4 1080p/24hz or 720p/60hz as you can do sbs, checkerboard ect at 1080p/60hz which is very nearly the same as 1080p page flipping at 120hz, 1080p/60hz is still 60hz per eye .

I've never used the ASUS so all I can say is that once my AW2310 was calibrated my jaw dropped. 3D was cool but I stopped using it after 6 months and enjoyed the 120Hz more. But that's just my stupid opinion.

Excellent comments above, ran in to the same screen dilemma after getting rid of my 3-samsung 2233rz. Agree with the hdmi 1.4 comment too, but... in my research at the time 2 months ago, I bought a bunch of Planar SA2311W. They are great and twice as crisp from my 2233rz. I can't compare to what you want to buy, but know these just went on sale again.

Ok, that's that on the screens. My point for posting? NVidia is NOT responding to any comments in the 3d vision surround forum and the last driver that works right is 270.61. This driver does NOT have the sli fixes for Dirt3 or any recent game. You will not be happy if you get this and want current drivers to work in 3d surround.

Check out the Nvidia 3D Surround forum and see if you can get an answer from them.

Single monitor 3D on 280.26 smokes.

asus r3/980x/3Xevga480/win7x64SP1 and asus r3 black/990X/3Xevga580HC2/win7x64SP1.
