6970 crossfire issues

Thread Starter
So I've just added a second 6970 to my sig rig and I've been playing some BC2. The game has frozen up on me twice, randomly, approx 30 min into gameplay. Actually the second time, it was in the between game screen right after clicking join.

Here's my afterburner fan profile:

While playing, I didn't see the GPU's get beyond about 65% load each, and GPU 1 stayed mostly between 63-67C and GPU 2 was staying at 72C or lower.

Now the second issue. Both times this happened, after booting up, I'm getting weird issues with the primary card. Afterburner will show GPU1 fan at 24% (should be 50), and no temp reading. Overdrive in the CCC also shows no temp reading, and says fan is at 20%, although manual slider is set to 50. GPU2 readings are all correct in both CCC and Afterburner.

BUT, about 10 min after boot up, it just starts working again. I hear the fan on the first card kick up, and then all readings are back to normal. Right now GPU1 is idling at 38C.

So I'm thinking/fearing this might have something to do with the card getting too hot, and then cooling down to a safer temp, or something along those lines, but why would it do that all of a sudden after chugging along just fine and never even going beyond 70C?

Also, is it normal to have a 6-8C difference in temps between the two cards, even at 0 load?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hi. Given the fact that the issues began when you installed the second card you should try running them both alone to see if you have any problems with either of them.

also, afterburner doesnt always play nice with all games. I would uninstall AB and then make sure each gpu is in working order independently. I was having games crash left and right on AB, so i removed it and flashed my 6950's instead which changed the overdrive limits and have been fine since. good luck

The issue is not the 2nd card, it is Afterburner.

Close it, and enjoy no lock ups.

It happens because of Punkbuster not liking MSI Afterburner, we discussed this long time ago in the PC Games section.

Yea, BC2 and afterburner do NOT play well together. Worked for my 5770, but not 6950. I think the theory is that AB is trying to access some protected memory that the videocard uses, and PB doesn't like that, or something...

The fix is to just not touch AB, or play on Non-PB servers.

Temperatures are fine.

Afterburner goes mental on BC2 as previously stated, so I wouldn't take what it says for gospel when playing that game.

And, the only thing I can think of to the reason why each card isn't being used fully is Vsync, and you're obviously not silly enough to have left that on.

Those two cards are beasts, I'm jealous. However, getting a second GTX 580 phantom 3gb in september! Along with a monitor with a ridiculous refresh rate/resolution. Not sure what yet though.

Anyway, everything should be fine. You got GPU-z? If so, post the results. Can find out if your cards are downclocking (which I also doubt).

Oh and with regards to your fan profiles, I think you may have one of two problems, the first could literally be you using two applications to control the fan speed, and they're getting confused, or secondly, MSI Afterburner requires a re-install, did you re-install when you added the extra card?
Good luck!

Yeah, I should have mentioned I was playing Crysis 2 for a good 45 min before this, with both cards at full load and about 70C. No problems at all and temps were great. It makes sense the issue is with BC2.

I did not try reinstalling AB, after the first boot with the new card installed, I closed it and relaunched it, and it recognized the second card, so I figured it was fine.

One more question though, is there another program out there that will let me set fan profiles like AB? And/or monitor load and temps during games?

If you disable the 'On-Screen Display' server in AB.. you should have no issues. The problem you speak off is not from Ab itself.. but rather the FPS monitoring portion. PB sees it as a background hack..

*as for your Xfire issues with AB- make sure you are applying the same settings in AB [there is a check box for like GPU's].. and leave AB set to the first GPU when you are done applying changes. I too had this issue, where AB was only OC'ing the 2nd GPU upon startup... Once I left AB set on the first GPU, it would work fine upon restart.. However, making changes to he 2nd GPU and leaving AB monitoring it.. made the issue return upon a restart.

so.. try-> open AB-> make changes to GPU2->make changes to GPU1.. then minimize or close AB and see if your issue comeback on a restart.

OP you could try this: http://www.geeks3d.com/20090218/ati-...-xtension-v10/

Has worked for me in the past. Although it doesn't control overclocks or fan profiles, unfortunately.

Ok, so I just got home and noticed I'm still having this issue with the first card not registering any values after a reboot.

Here's what I did:

Uninstalled Afterburner, rebooted.
Uninstalled Drivers on both cards via Device Manager, rebooted.
Reinstalled CCC 11.7, rebooted.

Immediately after reboot, this is what I see in CCC:

And,

Note 0*C and 20% fan speed, although slider is set to 50.

Now, I noticed that the moment I launched Firefox, I heard the fan on the first GPU ramp up, so I pull CCC back up, and now it reads correctly, as below:

Anybody have any idea *** is going on here? Also, Afterburner is still uninstalled.

Here are some screens of GPU-Z:

1st GPU (After above events):

2nd GPU:

Note that it says Crossfire is disabled on the MSI card? Is this normal? This is my first multi-gpu set up.
