Do I have to be worried about VRM temps? - Page 3

They get hot and even more hot when you overvolt. On my stock cooled 580 I tried to go for 1ghz core but no matter what volts I pushed, it crashes. It wasn't the gpu temp but the vrm's made it unstable i think

Just one of the benefits of water cooling - a full cover VGA block will keep VRM temps in check.

OP, when freezing with ln2 & dry ice the whole PCB cools down & helps keep VRM temps under control, but they still get hot & airflow is a must. The cooler the better, like the gpu itself.

Just a point of clarification ... I'm about 90% sure that video cards only have one VRM on them, and what you're actually talking about cooling here are called mosfets, not 'vrms' ... but there's some possibility I have a misunderstanding.

I also kinda wonder if its possible that running more volts actually makes these parts cooler, not hotter. Reason I say this is that I *think* (again, I could be wrong) that the reason these parts get hot is because they're responsible for converting the 12V input down to around 1V, the conversion of which releases heat. Thus, it may be the case that the further you raise the volts (towards 12V), the less 'work' these parts actually have to do.

Hopefully someone knows the answer to this positively, cause it's something I've always wondered about

Whether the plural is appropriate on a fully integrated PCB is a matter of debate.

Regardless, MOSFETS are not the only VRM component on that card I'd be cooling. The phase drivers, mosfets, plls, and the prodalizers are all good candidates to be sinked.

it only shows them if your card has the sensors ... as I found out the hard way switching from a GTX 260 with gpu/mem/vrm/pcb sensors to a GTX 480 with only gpu/pcb (whatever pcb temps actually mean) sensors, they no longer put in so many temp sensors

I doubt your card has a temp sensor on the VRMs or a monitoring IC that reports it.

If it was an option that they did before, you would think they would include it in the high end cards???
