Too keep or not to keep my 6970??

Thread Starter
So guys, i have a single MSI 6970 Lightning currently and my plans were to crossfire this card with another or maybe 2 for a triple crossfire config. Now i have been toying with the idea of going to SLI. Something like triple or quad 480's.

The question is what would perform better - 3xSLI 480's or 3x 6970 Lightnings??

Note: i also will upgrade to Bulldozer when if finally gets launched!!

Id definitely stick to the 6970's, I've had a couple of gtx 480s and let me tell you it's not worth it. The heat generation of the cards were insane and you would DEFINITELY get a bigger performance with the 6970s by far.

Another vote for the HD6970's for sure.

They're newer, probably will offer you more warranty, more performance, a lot less heat, less power draw... Not to mention the 6970's scale perfectly to 100%.

+1 to the 6970s

480 are way too hot compared to the 6970s so going sli with them isn't going to be that great.

now if you were doing sli 570 or 580 that would be a different story.

btw this is coming from a nvidia fan boy. so...

6970 lightning is better and faster than 480. SO on paper 2 vs 2 or 3 vs 3... the 6970s will offer more. Plus they scale good. So just get another 6970 lightning and oc it till it cry.

I'm pretty sure with either of those setups you will have to water cool (not totally clued up on the lightnings cooling performance but three cards sandwiched together is going to be well toasty) so heat should not be a deciding factor.

Performance wise the 6970 scales like a beast in crossfire.

It would be enough for x2 HD6970's for sure (Even a 750w PSU would be).

But for x3 HD6970's you'll probably need a better PSU.

honestly, your psu in your rig is fine for now but it might be cutting it if you OC all the cards.

looking into a 1k psu by corsair? seems like all the cool kids are buying those.
