There have been a number of good suggestions. One other thing:

I've seen a number of HP consumer designs suffer from overheat problems. In an Intel system, this means the CPU would throttle down if the temperature threshold was exceeded; your system would run, but it would be slower.

You could run some monitoring software to keep track of your CPU's operating speed to see if this is the case, or you could temporarily disable Intel SpeedStep in the system BIOS to force it to run at top speed. If this seems faster, I'd use compressed air to clean out the laptop's heatsink and any cooling vents.

If you are good at working on your own systems, it is better to actually remove the keyboard to get to the CPU fan and hold it still while blowing compressed air from the inside out. This will keep the fan from having its bearings spun hard by the compressed air, and ensure dust is blown out of the laptop rather than further in.
