Are you a 'proper' typist? - Page 11

bah, if I was to worry about my typing skills I would have paid more attention in my typing class in highschool....
My typing can be pretty fast and for the most part accurate, with the odd chance I need to use backspace to correct a spelling error....
and for the most part I use index, middle and pinky fingers to type....

I type on average around 100 WPM with minimal mistakes and I don't do it properly at all. For example, I hit the spacebar with my right index finger. I use almost all my fingers though except thumbs and pinkys (which are only used for keys like shift, control, etc).

I type with only the little finger on my left hand and my right elbow and get somewhere around 235wpm.

I think it's time to break back OCN TypeRacer championships.

Yes, I type properly. In elementary school, we had to go to our computer lab every day and use the program Type2Learn and I didn't do extremely well in it, the main thing being that I don't use the exact "Your fingers should be on A, S, D, F, J, K, L, and semicolon," but I still manage to beat just about everyone typing. I would say that I actually learned to type from MMO's like RS and WoW and still use the skills today.

Slightly off topic but in some ways related, I read this article about the difference between keyboards. The author says " About the only person that doesn't benefit from a mechanical keyboard is a hunt and peck typist (a person who hovers their fingers several inches above the keyboard and uses typically only the index finger on each hand to type)." Is that even a fair comment?

I would think that it was a fair comment. People who type properly push the keys whereas a "hunt and peck" typists generally taps the keys with more force so they wouldn't benefit from the feedback as much.

I also seem to fall under the not so 'proper' list. I pretty much type a certain way from gaming. My pinky is usually on shift or hanging off the keyboard while the other fingers rest around WSAD. My right hand sits around JKL with that pinky on the enter key. I had typing classes in High School and Mr G. tried showing me the 'correct' way but pretty much let me go with how I did it since I would out type the class anyways.

I used the same typing technique in my College typing class as well. I tested out the first day and was told if it works for me with the rate it was, they can't complain. LOL

I blame gaming! But hey, it works! =)

Heres my Das

Anyways, I type pretty damn proper on my left hand. I blame gaming for that, but on my right hand all I really use is my right index finger for pretty much everything on the right side of my keyboard. I blame this on because of the fact that when playing games like Starcraft and a lot of other games, I don't ever have my right hand on my keyboard at all. I average anywhere from 90-100 WPM, but I think I'm at my limit for this typing style. I'll probably learn to type proper in the future though.

Edit: Reminds me of the time where my little 16 year old cousin came over and busted out averaging 120-130 WPM like nothing with a "proper" style. Blew me away about the fact that my style had so many faults. I've no doubt he could step it up to 150+ when he's my age (21)

Same... Max score was 126 or 129 on that basic 10 fast fingers test. I usually get around 110 though using my WASD fingers and right index.

I think it's because of gaming like you. I chat a lot in Battlefield (requires hitting of JK and L while coming from mouse.)
