Are you a 'proper' typist? - Page 6

I could probably go faster (100-110 range) but I just woke up, haven't had coffee, or breakfast. I will come back later and try again.

EDIT: this was on a $10 Microsoft Wave keyboard with "proper" typing.

I'm sure that I have some room to improve technique or placement of my hands, but I type using all my fingers at about 70WPM. I used my index and middle fingers in school because I learned to type on a crappy typewriter and the keys were hard to press...

I learned to type quickly at my jobs.

I'm getting slightly faster since getting a mechanical keyboard.

Maybe I should learn to use more fingers for a better typing experience?

You're essentially noting the difference between a touch and a peck typer.

Peckers have to look down at the keys, whilst touchers don't.

There's no way someone can touch type with two fingers. There is just no way to gauge exactly where the keys are relative to each other being all over the board.

The same goes for someone typing with all fingers (except one thumb). You don't develop an affinity for which keys are where while still having to stare at the keys.

I actually recommend this site if you want to learn how to touch type. I'm into the 40s WPM already after just a month of practicing a little each day. That's average over thousands of characters.. it can spike up to 80 or 90 WPM if I hit a string that's easy to get through.

Once you get to the point that you're typing full words, copy a random news story from Google News that interests you into the "Practice your own text" lesson. I try to do a 2-5k character article once a day. One thing to note if you do this - it likes to add a space if there's a line break, so I always take out the breaks after copying the story in so I don't have double spaces where it would normally go to the next paragraph.

The guy in the video types quite sloppily TBH.

I concur. If you cite that you can perform > 80WPM, utilizing fewer than 50% of your available digits then you're likely inflating your accomplishments a tad. I challenge anyone claiming "middle fingers only 200 WPM" to post the results of any of the many online typing tests, with accuracy factored in (backspaces don't count as keypresses folks).

I type "proper" for the most part, and manage ~70 WPM at what I deem (and judging from others I work with) to be moderately high. I often neglect the right shift key.

I took typing courses in middle, high school and went to a computer centric university.
