XFCE 4.8 Holy buckets memory! (low) - Page 2

screen shot, fresh boot, nothing loaded but basic xubuntu start up apps (disabled lamp stack.)

installed scrot thru terminal, cap'ed screenshot, conky reports 322mb.

next shot is vanilla firefox (no addons, latest version in ubuntu repo's, 5.0 i believe it is.) task manager reports 96 mb with just ocn loaded and 54mb for the plugin container.

then i loaded up six pages of ocn's home page, task manager reports 197mb and 83mb for the plugin-container.

edit: updated links with imageshack as they were hard to see here due to the resizing.

I call bullox on 50MB use too, you just showed us a screenshot of FF running with a total mem use of 223MB use total. I can believe your running a very low WM/DM taking up ~100MB and FF taking up the rest but I can't believe FF being ~50MB on start. transhour is the only one who posts screens with proof of FF mem use.

[edit] I can run FF8 (nightly) with 190MB use and 9 tabs. Though that changes as I use the browser more, it actually sucks more or less for memory management.

OOOO I didn't see the "on the start". I always start mine with my last tabs, I don't know the last time I started FF with one tab (default). I don't even remember what that's like, does it feel normal? So weird.

i am not contesting _pat_ here, i figured since i made mention of my ram usage for FF, i should at least offer what i've seen when using it. startup with my homepage loaded (in FF it is OCN, in chromium its my personal website.), its always around a 100mb without any extension, i think with adblock i think it drops by about 10mb (as it hides the flash).

as for moneky he's claiming 51 mb total ram usage with FF open with 6 tabs, skype open, printing something, having conky and cairo-dock running. i'm calling shenanigans on that, as that is either a hell of memory management or he's running gcc from 2052 and compiled everything with -magic-memory optimization, or its simply occam's razor, and its a fib on his part, or a misunderstanding on ours.

as you mentioned xorg running a low memory footprint, if he means that is only using 51mb of system ram, then i will buy that, cause mine is slightly under 50mb right now...but all those programs running, with a wm and only 51mb, hogwash i say, plain simple hogwash.

Why would I bull about something like that in the first place?

FF8? I'm still stuck on 5 xD
It seems to do better than FF5. 150/6 is around 25mb/tab while FF8 seems to be 21mb/tab.

Isn't that what the "Restore previous session" button is for?

This. Hulu on Linux uses flash, and the flash wrapper alone takes up 50mb.

Just thought I'd chime in a remember everybody that low RAM usage can mean everything, but also it can mean nothing depending how the program is written. Some programs, such as Firefox (ignoring memory leaks), will scale to fit your hardware and will actually take advantage of extra RAM that you aren't using. If you have 2G of RAM and you only ever use 1G, the rest is simply a waste. I feel like sometimes people forget that if a program is using more memory it means more functionality of that program will be instantaneous.

Yeah, FF nightly is by far way ahead of the standard FF release. I've been seeing all the new features for almost 6 months ahead of whatever gets reported. So when I see a FF thread in the news I never bother, it's all old news.

ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/

Check out those release builds, MMMMM I think that says 8.0a1? I think so!

Also there seems to be a mem leak, maybe? It might be a flash leak, flash is known to give problems and piss on my memory use. It angers me so.

Oh yeah, I was just comparing Xorg vs Xorg and using XFCE vs KDE. Normally XFCE isn't THAT much lower but this... This is pretty smooth, this release is almost amazing. Too bad it's still the same XFCE! lol No new features but it's nice to see they found a way to crunch it even smaller.

I don't understand what all the fuss is about anymore.. 50mb 100mb .. really? It's called x64 and 4+GB.

I've had an extra 16gb mulling around in my shopping cart for a bit now... There's an easy way to page the whole / partition into ram on boot and use the ssd as a writeback cache. I can't seem to find the article now of course... 24gb is plenty for a full linux install. I'm waiting on the price of the 8gb dimms to drop so I can get a new mobo with like 128mb and go crazy

There is other hardware out there besides workstations. You can probably find one in your pocket right now (your phone). But yeah at the rate things are going because of the smartphone boom, pretty soon it'll be insignificant.

Why have a program which uses 500mb ram when you can have another program which does exactly the same thing for 50mb?

Thanks for the link. Will try it out later today. I thought they had only released 6 so far.

Edit: It's up for grabs on AUR
