XFCE 4.8 Holy buckets memory! (low) - Page 3

lol It's been on the AUR. It's in almost every distro and every repo, I don't know one that it isn't for. Yes, it's not in debian but you can use the ppc from Ubuntu (thank you Ubuntu!). If your not using it I don't know why, granted FF4 was shamefully hoggish on memory. FF5 has more stability and speed I'll say that but really nightly isn't nearly as bad as it was back then. Mainly because FF4 was just shameful to begin with.

i'm not exactly disagreeing. low is obviously better. But i think you're overstating the severity of the problem if 50 mb is an issue for the typical OCN member's workstation.

These windows / sql servers we have at work would be your guy's nightmares. They will take untold amounts of ram, eat it up immediately and beg for more. 32gb is not enough for some of these.

Personally I'm running an old laptop with a 5400RPM hard-disk. So I need to ooze out every inch of performance I can

As for windows servers... eghhhh. Maybe for internal network handling Active Directory and user groups, but other than that I don't see a reason to use one.
I found Linux based servers much easier to configure and maintain.

Yeah I'm still new to Arch. Been using it on and off for only a month or so. I still don't have the habit of checking AUR a lot.

yeah no kidding... try telling that to some of my coworkers who are so drunk on the microsoft koolaid they're off banging each other while reciting the license agreements.

SQL server isn't too bad to work with day to day, all things considered it's actually a very nice product. But it literally will eat every last bit of ram it can find. This is good in a production environment, but for any dev/test type of work it is either not usuable or you're stuck with the same high hardware cost as your production box...

[edit] I can run FF8 (nightly) with 190MB use and 9 tabs. Though that changes as I use the browser more, it actually sucks more or less for memory management.

[edit2]

OOOO I didn't see the "on the start". I always start mine with my last tabs, I don't know the last time I started FF with one tab (default). I don't even remember what that's like, does it feel normal? So weird.

as for moneky he's claiming 51 mb total ram usage with FF open with 6 tabs, skype open, printing something, having conky and cairo-dock running. i'm calling shenanigans on that, as that is either a hell of memory management or he's running gcc from 2052 and compiled everything with -magic-memory optimization, or its simply occam's razor, and its a fib on his part, or a misunderstanding on ours.

as you mentioned xorg running a low memory footprint, if he means that is only using 51mb of system ram, then i will buy that, cause mine is slightly under 50mb right now...but all those programs running, with a wm and only 51mb, hogwash i say, plain simple hogwash.

Ok nay sayers... and this is now with 7 tabs open in FF, LibreOffice, and 3 PDFs open. Skype and printing on standby, Tint2, Cairo-Dock, and (obviously) Conky runnings as well.

EDIT: added full screen shot for proof of this screen shot. (numbers are slightly different because I took this about 20 mins after the 1st SS. Sorry about the resizing, photobucket does it automatically.)

Well if conky is wrong then I'm wrong. And if conky is wrong, then it sucks, and there is no point to using it. So why is it so popular if its wrong? Also, this is opensource... why has no one fixed it if its wrong?

Conky isn't good with reporting all things. You probably have a flag set that's reporting the wrong memory. Check out my screenshot, you see the different columns? Do you see SHR? Look familiar? Same readings as your conky is getting, I'm guessing it's pulling from that. RES is what the real memory use is, at least on my system that's what I go by.

[edit] What your reading is % of ram, that's 30% of your ram use by FireFox. (edit: Conky actually doesn't report memory used by application, it's a percent. I should have realized that off the bat)

[edit2] Check my conky pic, you'll see what I mean. (edit:clarity) I would be using 18MB ram by that logic, however I'm using 18% of my total ram (I'm not sure if it's total ram or total ram use). It ends up being like 350MB

according to conky, which uses percentages, you have 1.90gb of total system ram. firefox open with 7 tabs, is using 30% of that ram which anyone with simple math skills can figure out = 615mb of ram.

the highest ram section and your total system ram usage in in conky is in conflict, you have something setup incorrectly in there imho, as your FF can not be using more ram, than it says your entire system is using.

so your "top 4" in your highest mem section is at follows:

firefox = 615mb
x = 300mb
plugin-container=47mb
java = 39mb

so with those you are roughly at 48% of total system ram...more than likely much more when you toss on cairo-dock, skype and whatever else you are running. post your conky config so we can take a look at it, see if we can spot your problem.

Chrome uses more RAM than Firefox on average, I have no idea where this "Chrome uses less RAM" myth came from but it really needs to stop.

I feel like sometimes people forget that if a program is using more memory it means more functionality of that program will be instantaneous.
It's not a waste if you've mounted stuff to RAM, the extra space can be used then and to be honest, I prefer applications to be efficient with the RAM they use rather than just take up as much as possible, if a certain file doesn't really need to be in the RAM or cache, I'd rather that space used by something that does.

Eh, if they need that much RAM (as in, actually need, not just are programmed badly) then its fine by me at least.
