People don't understand that the biggest breakthroughs in science are at the most basic levels of science. Our understanding of chemistry, physics, and fundamental biology prop up and facilitate all of the more complex discoveries and inventions in the world.
Nothing we appreciate in the modern world would be possible without grasping the fundamental forces of the universe. Do people think somebody just sat down and invented things like the semiconductor (what makes your computer work) without having intense knowledge of the wave/particle duality properties of the electron?
I'm willing to bet all of these idiots would sit there and insult research into the properties of electrons as having no application...
