It all comes from the assumption that if they have radio, and are actually sending out signals, then, they're most likely very advanced.

After billions of years of biological evolution—on their planet and ours—an alien civilization cannot be in technological lockstep with us. There have been humans for more than twenty thousand centuries, but we've had radio only for about one century. If alien civilizations are behind us, they're likely to be too far behind to have radio. And if they're ahead of us, they're likely to be far ahead of us. Think of the technical advances on our world over just the last few centuries. What is for us technologically difficult or impossible, what might seem to us like magic, might for them be trivially easy. They might use other, very advanced means to communicate with their peers, but they would know about radio as an approach to newly emerging civilizations. Even with no more than our level of technology at the transmitting and receiving ends, we could communicate today across much of the Galaxy. They should be able to do much better.

If they exist.

I kept trying to explain that to my wife. I hate those 1 sided shows but find the information interesting. Such a conundrum.

I honestly think we will destroy ourselves, overpopulate this world, the human race can not sustain itself by breeding continuously at the rates today, there's so much war, so much hunger, poverty, violence etc, i would love for some advanced race to just beam me up, and take me with them, i know i'm gonna sound like a total ... well w.e, but even though i'm a human, i do not respect humanity.

I think its somewhat likely that we will destroy ourselves, but it won't be from overpopulation. It will probably be from ignorance. As Sam Harris says "it is possible to both know how to build an atomic weapon, and think upon death you will be met by 72 virgins in paradise." Culture could adapt to overpopulation. Technological advances could alleviate problems related to resource depletion or environmental damage. I'm not sure how we would cope with a nuclear war started by people fighting for delusional reasons.

You sound like you need to learn history for some perspective. I don't think things are as bad as they seem and humanity has come a long way just in the past 100 years.

Honestly, i think it's a pretty self-centered idea that we would have anything that aliens capable of FTL travel would want.

All the minerals and resources found on earth can be found in much greater quantities in practically any solar system.

Exactly. Things are actually getting better, not worse.

eh, i'm well versed on the history of humanity, how we got here, wars, etc. i just don't see how humanity can overcome the obstacles that are in front of us. that includes religion, overpopulation etc. We may develop technologies to avert this from happening for a while, but i believe it is inevitable.

Perhaps you don't have quite as wide a view of history as I do. Or, you might know as much as I, but you might not look at it the same way. I look at it like this. 100 or so years ago (a blink of an eye) we were crapping in outhouses and had no electricity. It took 6 hours to wash clothes. There was no air conditioning. You had to grow a good portion of your own food. 300 years ago people believed in witches. 1000 years ago we were just emerging from the dark ages. 10000 years ago, we weren't even farming or civilized.

The problems we have today are brand spanking new problems. While the scale might be large, they pale in comparison IMO to the problems we have overcome in the past. I don't know exactly how we will overcome our problems in the future, just like you don't. However I don't think my ignorance is reason to condemn humanity.

you have very fair points, yes i know about that history, my view is that, it is amazing how we got past that point, i do believe humanity will keep surprising us, the problems today is society as a whole, we are becoming more violent, not more civilized, hell we rushed into Libya on the basis that they can't sort things out themselves, we have gangs everywhere and people who just want to inflict harm on other people. This is a problem where our society has become so relaxed and the value of a human life is "nothing" to the people doing this.
We need to change drastically if we are to survive as a race. i may be ignorant, but i know what's right/wrong and try not to harm any living thing.
We are seeing a revolution in which an "Anonymous" movement is trying to get started to make our governments listen. yadda yadda yadda. (i had to bring up that point we just fight fight fight, it never stops.)

gawd, sorry this is so off topic, anyway i'm glad this search is continuing.

I find this to be a trending view among Americans. That we're somehow becoming less civilized and things are getting worse. The 1950's is pointed to as the pinnacle but it only SEEMED that way b/c America at that time was a caste system.

However if you actually look at it from a world view, you'd find that we're far MORE civilized now than ever and we're far less violent now than ever. You're talking about Libia but the situation in Libia is mild compared to the cold war and any number of covert operations we did in the past. Gang activity actually peaked a long time ago.
