When you find alien life we will have no way to communicate - they will likely speak in a competely different type of language, we won't share the same knowledge, and likely won't even share anywhere near the same technology. Not to mention they most likely will not look human. What are the chances of us sitting down with them and figuring each other out peacefully? It would take years, and chances are they would rather just take our resources. We would be inferior species to their eyes. We can't even get along with some of the other races on own planet.
Not trying to put a nail in this coffin, just stating my opinion.
Quoted for truth.
Imagine you're a superior alien intelligence, possibly an aggressive one at that? Better yet, imagine you're us, but smarter and way more advanced and you discover an inferior, violent and stupid alien race that is on the brink (relatively) of destroying not only themselves, but also their planet and it's vast resources. What would you do?
I'm pretty sure we would colonize and destroy. And I think the idea that we'd find a species of equal or greater intelligence who would also have MORE compassion than we have as a species would be extremely unlikely.
If anything, I think we're more likely to find insect-like aliens that don't have compassion at all, a la Zerg.
