You forgot the third, most obvious possibility my friend.

3] they are more advanced forms of dolphins that have just mastered space travel and will come to earth to free their brethren and put us in Landworld, the dolphin version of Seaworld for the entertainment of all dolphins

Then lets hope we are just as intelligent and obliterate them back, make it like EVE online.

This may be true, but one has to also consider a race that never knew of any kind of religion or belief system could also be much more aggressive without any moral compass to deter them from obliterating another species/race. I'm not a religious person myself, just pointing out another side to consider. Now, one could also argue that they would be even more docile than us due to never having religion as well. As we know, much hostility and many wars have been fought in the name of religion. Guess it goes both ways.

Pretty sure if we had the tech to find them, we have the tech to handle them if they got out of line.
We also have two things they don't.

I'd imagine all intelligent races start off by following a religion. Everything "with logic" tries to understand the nature of their envirenment and religion has always provided us with answers.

I've always thought the consequences of our actions determine what's right or wrong.

If those consequences don't exist for them, then whose to really say what's good/evil? Human conflicts are probably totally different from that of aliens.

I do not think morality and religion have much to do with each other. Have you read any Sam Harris or watched any of his debates or lectures on youtube?

Religion does not equal morality or compassion. If that were the case, then the Crusades, and just rifts and disagreements between religions would not lead to bloodshed.

If a race was able to overcome vast distances and come here, then they have to be at their own peak intelligent wise, and philosophically as well.

Hence the second part of my post. I know one does not equal another, but many believe that it does. It could go either way, I highly doubt if they could survive long enough to become as advanced as they are, that they would be hostile. If they are hostile to us, it would mean they would have had to be hostile before and probably to each other. They wouldn't have lasted long enough to become that advanced if that were the case. I think most would be docile myself.
