Update GTX460 (768mb) in view of BF3?

Thread Starter
Hi all,

I currently have a Cyclone GTX460 (OC, 768MB) which is very nice but I feel I can do better, as Battlefield 3 is coming out soon biggrin.gif

I'm not a huge gamer, but I like to have a decent machine. What would be a good card for under 220 euros, or around this price?

I only game for BC2, and then BF3 when it comes out. I use a 1080 x 1920 resolution and I don't plan on getting anything higher (maybe going from 22" to 24 or 25" but I doubt the resolution would get much higher..?).
I want to use AAx8 and whatever the other one's called x16 with no lag (also using a i5-760 so I think I'm ok with processor speed).

Hesitating between a GTX560, the Radeon 6950 1GB and a cheap Radeon 6950 2GB... But any suggestions are welcome smile.gif
I have an Antec 300 but I can upgrade if the new card is too big. My power supply is a 600W OCZ ModXTreme which I hope would be enough...

Thanks!

depending on how cheap the hd6950 2gb is, i would go for the GTX 560TI as the second choice. is your gtx 560 ti or non ti?

if you plan on getting the 2gb version of the hd6950, you will most likely need to upgrade your case. I had the 2gb version that just barely fit in my CM 690II (a sweet case btw if youre thinking about upgrading)

no worries, as long as youre only running one card, your psu will be enough

Keep the 460 and wait for the next cards. The 460 will get you pretty good frames if it's overclocked. 560ti and 6950s aren't huge steps up.

errmmm if he's running 1080p with a 768mb card...would not suggest getting another 768mb card...

definitely upgrade it to a card with more memory...but wait for Kepler...

Oh yeah and good luck getting AAx8 or x16 with playable frames at 1080 on BF3...

I can't do SLI due to my motherboard... frown.gif

I've overclocked my 460 via Afterburner to about 810mhz. I didn't tweak the voltage at all. It's running nicely but I've never run any benchmarks or anything.

Thanks for the tips and the reassurance over the power supply, good to know smile.gif When are those new cards supposed to come out then..? The new generation is fairly recent but then again it was less than a year between the 460 and 560 so...

Basically I'm putting aside 400 euros for more RAM (going to 8GB from 4GB), a new case and a new graphics card. Everything else is nice and doesn't need upgrading for what I do with the PC.

I'd SLI your 460. I wish I could but unfortunately I own a motherboard with only one pci slot and a case with only 4 expansion slots. The 560 is not a really big improvement, cooling & noise might be better but thats about it. The 6970 is the way to go.

I would wait a little longer and see what the requirements are to play the game decently.
