Best <$400 5.1 Surround Sound Speakers? - Page 2

Hmm i would do bang for buck 2.1 with either amp + passive bookshelfs or active studio monitors and a proper separate sub? Just to share what my bro's sub $190 plans are after i did up an active Edifier 1900TII 2.0 set up for his daughter

Edifier 1900TII $80 free ship
http://www.dinodirect.com/speaker-mu...source=1900TII

Dayton SUB-80 $99
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=300-631

you'd need a 3.5mm/RCA and RCA/RCA cable and it's all good hehe

Maybe one could scale up to an AE5 + Bigger sub with more $$ hehe

They wouldn't be connected to my laptop - they'd sit in my dorm room connected to the desktop I built earlier this summer, but what's the deal with having just a single 3.5mm jack? Does that affect how the speakers will sound?

Oops. sorry, don't know why I assumed you were connecting them to your laptop
If you're using 5.1 speakers and only connecting them via a single headphone jack, you won't be getting full 5.1 sound, only stereo. They won't sound terrible, just not as good as using the on board sound on your desktop.

Free bump either way...

Okay you need to decide what you want for a sound system.

5.1 is surround sound and will be immersive in games and movies.

2.0 or 2.1 is stereo and is good for music.

If you are only using a single 3.5mm jack then you are getting stereo, like from a laptop for example, so it is a waste of money for a 5.1 system. But if you have optical audio out or HDMI from your laptop then you can get up to 7.1 channels of audio. But that requires some sort of decoder like a receiver.

If you are hooking an analog (3.5mm jacks, three to be exact) 5.1 up to a desktop, your desktop will have the necessary audio jacks to do surround sound.

Connecting a 5.1 system by only using a stereo cable does NOT mean there is worse sound quality. Sound quality is unaffected by that, it just means you are getting less CHANNELS of audio. So you have a center channel, and two surround channels that are not playing any sound... so they are paper weights. Unless you have a "Matrix" mode or some type of digital processing that converts stereo to surround sound but that never really works that well I have read. Because you can't add what isn't there, you are merely filtering certain sounds to the rear channels which is more of guess work than actual sound PLACEMENT.

Hope that helps.

Thanks all, especially Doomtomb. Very informative and very helpful! I went with the Onkyo's and they're great! Not as loud as the Z5500's are (my buddy has them) but certainly pack a punch and have great sound clarity (connected via HDMI) - definitely the right choice!
