New Build - Check please

Hello Guys,

I'm new here & looking for some advice for my new build.

Mainly used for gaming & video encoding/rendering etc ...

CPU: Intel core I7 2600K. (hopefully overclocked to 4.7 - 5 Ghz)
MOBO: Asus Maximus IV extreme-Z (good mobo to overclock ?)
RAM: Gskill Ripjaws x 1600 mhz
COOLING: Corsair H80 - H100 (H100 will fit in the case i want (corsair graphite 600t white, but no push-pull) what do you guys think about it ?
GPU: EVGA GTX 580 two way SLI or AMD 6990 - 6970 CFX ( you opinion would be fine )
SSD: OCZ vertex 3 120gb
HDD: WD caviar Black
PSU: Corsair HX 1050 watt or Corsiar AX850 ?

I hope this system will work well, planning on installing w7 Ultimate 64bit on it.

Some questions:

1.I heard some rumors this motherboard has a slow POST time. Will it be faster with all the controllers disabled i dont use ? for example marvell sata6 controller.

2. This motherboard has 20 phase power design. The gigabyte UD7 board has a 24 phase power design but not a UEFI bios. Will it be usefull to has 4 more power phases ?

3. GPU: Not quite sure which is the best in my case. Just looking for the best performance. Planning on gaming on eyefinity.

4. COOLING: @ a friends place i saw a corsair H80 working. His ambient temp is about 24 °C now. His idle temps are quite high i think its around 30°C idle. 55°C full loaded on stock settings. Not sure if this cooler is the best option then.H100 will fit in my case but push-full config wont work in my case. Also looking to a Noctua NH-D14. (but this is kinda big)

Hopefully you guys can help me through this.

Thanks!

Greetings,
Fred

hey man, welcome to OCN! Hop on to here to fill your current system stats.

Answer to 3: the rig looks great, although I want to know: do you game on one screen or two? if so what are the sizes? Because two 580s in sli might be overkill (considering they will net you 1 grand) but if money isnt an issue and you want the best of the best, two 580s is the best of the two choices.

answer to 2: Phases in and off themselves dont really matter that much, its the overall construction and quality of the board that will matter, especially off a 4 phase difference.

Answer to 5: My water cooling was a custom job, but here are some reviews for the H100. Best is to look for some benchmarks and see waht you can expect of the H100 and the H80

Thanks Nevaziah !

At this moment i have a Dell u24011h monitor, but planning on getting 2 more to go in eyefinity mode.

I think i'm going to go for the 580 in SLI.

Custom watercooling is nice. But i think i'm not realy ready for it. I'm not realy into the modding/tweaking business atm.

Thanks man !

I think you mean Nvidia Surround Vision since you going with GTX 580 SLI.

Custom watercooling isn't hard with beginner kits like the XSPC RASA RS240 kit. About the same cost of H100, but with the benefit of being able to add to the loop in case you want to cool those 580s also.

I personally like the Crucial M4/Intel 510 over the OCZ 3 SSD, but that's up to you.

Hey Topgun nice rig, mind if I ask what the price of your build is?

I'm going to second a Crucial M4 > Corsair Vertex 3.

It's true that the Vertex 3 tops performance charts but you should also look into some of the issues that people have with these drives, particularly with OCZ in general.

Besides that, really awesome build! Very jealous of your SLI 580 config.

Thx for the replies guys !

Still thinking about which SSD i'm going to buy ...
Crucial M4 isnt that much slower as the vertex 3 in a few reviews but the vertex 3 has lots higher write speeds ... Allthough it isnt that important.

@Morlu: I will give you next week a price in €.

Still need some advice for the cooling solution.
