HTPC GPU: Nvidia or ATI?

Thread Starter
I just got my HTPC up and running and discovered that the onboard GPU is a POS. Drivers don't work or anything. So I have decided to go with a dedicated GPU.

What would be a good GPU for just movie and tv show watching? I will not be playing games on it at all. I need it to be below $100 and not consume much power and also have a full size HDMI output. Should I go with Nvidia or an ATI card? I have heard Nvidia has better drivers, but ATI cards consume less power. What do you guys think?

A 5550 will serve you well. They're perfect HTPC cards. As far as drivers are concerned, I haven't had a driver issue since my 4850.

ATI is typically better for HTPCs.

A 5450 can be had for about $40 and runs 1080p video no problem.

I use an old 3450 in my HTPC and it works great.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! Will all these be able to do HD audio bitstreaming through the HDMI slot?

Cool! I thought I was the only one using a 3450 as an HTPC card.

I don't know what audio bitstreaming is (), but I have an HDMI cable going from my 3450 to my TV and it gets audio just fine. Is that what audio bitstreaming is?

He want's to know if he can get DTS and the like to his receiver I assume.

The ATi and Nvidia cards should support bitstreaming.

Edit: This review should help. http://www.anandtech.com/show/4380/d...-gpus-shootout

It's basically when you have your HDMI running from your GPU to a A/V receiver and it shows on the receiver you are getting full lossless HD audio. It would say something like "DOLBY TRUE HD" or "DTS-MA" something along those lines.

ATi supports bitstreaming over HDMI on all cards since 5xxx series, so a 5450 would probably be a good choice

i don't really pay attention to nvidia, but i would assume they have it worked out by now?
