Which would be better 6990+6970 or 580 3gb sli?

Thread Starter
I just got my lightning extremes yesterday and just installed it today... WOW,

i have nothing to complain, they are definitely what i expected. Can't wait to start benching these

My question is, the amount i spent on them... i would've been able to snatch myself a 6990 and a 6970 for sure, even if i had to resort to paying an inflated ebay price.

Just curious... would the 6990+6970 trifire have been better?
(actually i think i could've gotten four 6970s for the same price... )

Depends highly on what you run. There are some things were a ati card will dominate and some things were nvidia will dominate. Benchmarking aside since nvidia has the options of cuda, they are pretty close.

My thinking is that since you already have a pair of GTX580 3GB, keep them.

Granted that the 3GB memory is a little waste considering that your resolution is only 1920x1080, this pair is more quiet and puts out less heat than 6990+6970 (or four 6970s).

HD6990+HD6970 (tri-fire) will give you a higher framerate than your GTX580 3GB SLI but I think the gain is rather meaningless as the framerate will be so high (at 1920x1080) that the gain will not be noticeable.

Well, since you're running a single monitor at 1080p only, both solutions are probably overkill, lol, so you did fine either way you went.

tri fire will beat out the SLI, and quad will be much more. But the FPS you get now is fine, whats the difference between 200 and 300?

Tri fire will beat the 580s. 4 x 6970 will prison rape the 580s.

You only need 2 6970s to match the performance of 3GB 580s in SLi.

Personally, I would have taken the 580s. Even though you can get 4 6970s for roughly the same amount, possibly a little more, the amount of power draw and heat they put out would be insane comparatively speaking. Both solutions are overkill for 1080p gaming anyway. I'm kind of left wondering why you got 3GB versions for only 1080p gaming though

Probably could've gotten close to 3 vanilla 580 1.5gbs and be even better off long term, but oh well lol

Whos to say he doesn't plan on getting 2 more monitors? If he has $1000+ to drop on gpus it could be very possible that more monitors are on the way

6990 + 6970 easily beats out 580 SLI. Should've thought of this before purchasing.
