Help with upgrading system

post #1 of 27
Thread Starter
Last week I did the most stupid thing, I bought an asus GTX580 for my outdated rig confused.gif It even gets worse. I like the card so much that i'm willing to buy another one for SLI...

Now the problem is, can my Power supply (odin GT 800w and thermaltake 250W (2 6 pins connectors) handle it? Or should I first upgraded my mobo and cpu? but the 2011 socket is coming...

In the first place I should have never bought the GTX580 for my (current) rig cool.gif

I would wait until you can upgrade to either 1155 or 2011. The E8500 is a big bottleneck for the 580.

Are you using that 250 Thermaltake unit right now? If so, then stop because you don't need it.

I'm converting the two six pins to one 8 pin connector (for my gtx580). I bought it before my odin gt because i needed a six pin connector years ago and my psu at the time did not had a 6 pin connector.

Buying a high end gpu is never stupid, but SLI gtx 580 is pretty overkill except for high resolutions so I would take the 500 you will spend for that second card and get a 1155 mobo, a 2500k, and 8GB of ddr3.

Edit: and for god sakes get windows 7

@morgofborg.

The problem is, I live at Belgium (Europe). Prices are high because or american and asian friends think 1$ = 1€ biggrin.gif

I'm also wondering : Should I wait for the 2011 socket or not? I'm only playing medieval 2: total war for the moment and the gameplay is acceptable (even with the C2D)

Edit : I hate Microsoft. Almost every year a new windows version. So I refuse to buy Windows 7... ( I admit I'm also a PS3 fanboy...)

Why does he have to get Windows 7? It's not like he's using Windows XP! Geez, dude.

I recommend just using the adapters that came with the card instead of that Thermaltake unit.

Why? The Odin GT basically has five 8-pin connectors: a single 8-pin, and four 6+2's.

Good question. I Think because I became emotionally attached to my thermaltake unit... I had good times with it so I should use it imo...
