Frio vs D14 vs Silver Arrow

Thread Starter
I'm going to pick up the last of my computer parts this Sunday, and I need some help deciding on a cooler.

I was gonna get the Frio at first, but having taking a brief look around this forum, I didn't see it be recommended very much.

They're all about the same price, at the store I'm getting my parts from, so I figure I'd ask and see which would be the best option.

Not sure if this makes a difference in what might be best for me but, I'm gonna be getting a P8P67 Rev 3.0, I have an i7 2600k, and it's all gonna be in a Corsair 650D case. And I have an Antec HCG 750W PSU.

I would get the D14 if you plan to heavily OC that CPU. Should have plenty of room for the D14 with your set up and it will keep that 2600K nice and cool.

It terms of performance I think it goes:

NH-D14
Silver Arrow
FRIO

Saw a video of a guy who swapped the stock fans on the D14 for some 120mm 1850RPM GTs and got a few degrees drop on temps.

I have the D14 and a frio, the D14 is a twin tower cooler and it performs quite better than the frio. But I guess the silver arrow achieves 2-3 degrees less than the D14. So I would suggest to get the D14 or the silver arrow. They're pretty much the same nonetheless.

They all perform pretty much similarly, pick whichever one is the cheapest and go with it. At most you will see a 1-2 C difference.

I have the D14 and recommend it, but am not jaded enough to realize the other 2 perform about the same.

The SA and D14 basically perform at the same level. Different review sites have different coolers on top, and they're always close enough it's just percent error.

Unfortunately, I don't know much about the Frio so can't say anything good or bad about it.

Off topic: another HR-02 user!!! zomg

Thanks for all the responses.

Turns out the store is all out of Silver Arrow, so its either the Frio ($15 off, down to $55) or the D14 ($10 off, down to $70).

They're starting a weekend sale tomorrow, so if either one of these will go on sale more, that may sway me one way or the other.

If it's down to the D14 & the Frio, I'd say get the D14 since the SA is out of stock.

For 70 bucks, the D14 is a good deal. Also note that the Silver Arrow is freakin gigantic, the measurements they give you from the website or whatever aren't right, haha. One of my fans hit side panel cuz of my Ripjaws.

Unless you have a Gigabyte board your D14 fans will have a fixed RPM. Silver Arrow has PWM fans, and runs 3dB quieter than the D14.

SA > D14 by a little less than 1c
D14 > Frio by 3 - 5c

Frio is an excellent heatsink, but the other two are the very best.

For a non-Gigabyte mb, probably the best bet would be to mail-order a SA. Whatever heatsink you get, be sure to buy low-profile RAM.

I would recommend taking a look at my thread, The Sandy Stable Club and at the top of the spreadsheet select cooling, you should be able to see temps and how the cooler's are performing under different or similar overcocks, it's quite informative.

Hope that helps, link is in my sig
