Rockstar thinks they're supporting the PC - Page 8

it makes them money and that makes them happy in the end.

Consoles are where the money is. There is no doubt about that; that is why Activision whores CoD every year and every other company is jumping on board in that "console-bandwagon".

The PC is an entirely different platform and demographic; it requires someone who is really dedicated to games to build and have a gaming-capable/specific PC. That is something that costs significantly more than a console which is a gaming machine out of the box for a price less than that of a graphics card!

Most people either don't have the patience, time, or funds to build a gaming PC and so they opt for the consoles. It is simply a fact that a majority of the gamers are on consoles.

It shouldn't be surprising then that game companies cater to that segment of the market since they are in the majority.

This argument is analogous to comparing Toyota and Ferrari. The former is a type of car that a much larger proportion of the population can afford and so Toyota will cater to that market; they make all their cars in that price range. Ferrari is for the enthusiast who is willing to fork out the extra cash to have that unique driving experience. Ferrari makes only a fraction of the profits that Toyota realizes. Gaming PCs are like Ferraris. Consoles are like Toyotas.

As a company that has to answer to investors' demands as well as the board of directors, it would be prudent of them to cater to the market that will bring them the most profits; consoles.

Rockstar is precisely doing that. They have allocated very few resources to make the games refined for the PC market; they know there isn't as much money in it for them. Let's not delude ourselves and think companies will do us a favor; they are in it to milk every dollar possible.

If Rockstar thinks it's catering to PC gamers, they're simply lying. Console ports are crap and GTA IV without mods is clear evidence of this.

Except that analogy is wrong. Not even a quarter of the PC gaming market are elitists with top of the range hardware, in fact most of them run PCs with low/mid-range rigs which consist of comparable hardware to today's consoles (built for MMOs/casual shooters usually, like WoW or CSS). Look at L4D for example: PC version wasn't a port and so it runs perfectly, even on 5+ years old PCs and sales for it were superb, and still are. If Rockstar had put in the work into optimizing their games, they would have gained a much larger amount of customers.

And console game sales only last as long as the console. Any PC developer with half a brain would understand that developing PC games is investing in long-term and continuous profit, whereas the console versions will have their heyday and pass the trend very quickly.

You do realize that ALL of Rockstar games have ALL been direct console ports over to the PC, right? This is not a new practice at ALL. Look at GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, Max Payne 1 and 2..... They were ALL released on consoles first, and ran like a turd on the hardware given at that time.

Seriously, try to play GTA III on a Pentium II 450MHz with a 16MB graphics card. My laptop can BARELY pull playable framerates on it with a 64MB Geforce 6150.
My netbook with an Intel Atom N445, 2GB of RAM, and an Intel GMA 3150 gets perfectly playable framerates on GTA III and Vice City. It feels like I'm playing it on a PS2.

Have you played L.A. Noire OP? It's actually a pretty fun game. I don't see how it couldn't be worth $50 if they actually optimized it.

No I haven't, but I heard stuff about it. But I wouldn't buy it for $50. I waited for a year and a half before I bought GTA 4. Now it's like $20 on Amazon.. I think i'll do the same for LA Noire..

Bethesda never ruins their games for PC gamers though. I've had a better experience with all of their games on PC compared to my console experiences. That's why I love Bethesda

Also when the OP mentioned MW3, that didn't make sense, they don't give a crap about us, they always just port over the games from the consoles... Do you remember MW2? They didn't even bother giving us dedicated servers, they gave us the same crappy connection as the console players were given..

I didn't realize that. It's just that I named MW3 because from CoD 2 up I've never had any problems like lag or crashes. They've all ran smooth and flawlessly..even if my PC barely met the minimum at the time (MW2). But at least we didn't have to wait months after the console release, like Rockstar have done numerous times.

Also when New Vegas was released, there was a bug that made the game lag when in heavy populated areas like New Vegas or the Dam..they made a patch that fixed it, but for me there was a lot of glitches..I ended up uninstalling it twice and haven't played it in months

Yeah CoD 4 runs great on my machine, and I didn't know about the New Vegas glitch, I only just finished building my gaming PC lol so I've only just started playing, but so far Oblivion, Fallout 3 and New Vegas all run great.

I do agree with you on Rockstar though, it's kind of ridiculous how they say they're supporting PC but yet they make us wait months to years just to play their games when they release them on consoles before hand anyway.

I hope they are working on Red Dead Redemption for PC because I loved playing that game at my friend's houses..

I also have Oblivion and Fallout 3. I love both those games. Especially Fallout 3. Also apart from the glitches I had with New Vegas, it ran really smooth on High settings, and I've been using an AMD dual-core since 2007.

But now that I think about it, most Rockstar games look like they belong on consoles..but it's also ironic how they're treating us, considering they started out on the PC. And by releasing a few "current gen" games they think they're supporting the platform. Unfortunately Red Dead will never come to PC..unless some company buys it from Rockstar and makes a PC port..but from all the money Rockstar made, and is still making from it..it's not gonna happen.

I'm not really looking forward to LA Noire..it's not my type of game really.

Protip; LA Noire will not be based on RAGE for PC version. Also, seems like it will have DX 11 support.
