Can my PSU handle 2x HD6870 in CrossFire or 2x GTX480 in SLI?

Thread Starter
First of all, I will need to upgrade my motherboard and CPU, so this post is with the future in mind...

Cost / performance wise would the 6870's be better than the 480's? Maybe if I purchase one card now and another of the exact same model a year down the road the cost will be much less too.. So in that case I'm thinking I should go for the GTX480's and SLI down the road but lemme know if you think otherwise?

And will my sig rig PSU even be able to handle two of those cards or will I need to upgrade that before I even think about running two GPUs?

And last but not least, by going with either of these setups will I need to get VGA coolers or can I get by on stock air cooling alone?

Thanks!

Yes of course it can handle it.
Stock is fine, depending on which model you want.
Just make sure your case has good airflow.

it will handle 2 6870 or even 2 6950 or one 480. 850 watts is the usual recommendation for 2 480s

GTX480 SLI = Hell no GTX580's in an i7 system overclocked pull around 780w of power and a GTX480 pulls like 10% more then a 580. 2 480's id trust on a high quality 850

When being pushed hard in games like Crysis 1 (or DOW 2 in menu for some reason) my sig rig pulls over 600 watt (my UPS starts beeping at 600 watt because that is its max rated output). And i know when completely maxed it will use a bit more. So with 480s expect to add at least another 150-200w on to that.
