I just screwed myself didn't I? (changed TIM on XFX 6970) - Page 8

By the way, it's asterisk.

I seem to recall someone had an issue like this where the TIM changes just didn't seem to help, and then he did something a little different and - shazam! temps plunged. I will try to find the thread.

I don't think you applied enough tim. Gpus require more than CPUs. Also the cm Tim isn't all that good. I would use as5 since you already have a tube of it. If you buy new Tim the noctua brand Tim is some of the best I've used.

My last application was with the AS5 tim. I posted a picture of how much I used a few pages back. I put a good amount of it in an asterisk pattern.

Alice did you look at his pictures? He used a whole lot of TIM and the AMD GPU dies aren't very big at all, us Nvidia guys think all GPUs need a whole lot of TIM because of our IHS.

Vision your' last pics were pretty blurry but it really appeared like too much in every application from what I could tell. Read my above post about not wanting a layer of TIM per say, just TIM as opposed to air. Basically you want as little TIM as you can get away with because the copper of the HS conducts better than the TIM, the TIM just conducts better than air. So you don't want it to be GPU die -> TIM TIM TIM TIM TIM -> copper HS. You want GPU DIE->tim->COPPER HS. The goal is just to replace the air in "GPU die -> air -> copper HS" with TIM.

Ok, I'm at a loss. I can't find the thread for the life of me, but one thing I would note is that retightening the screws on the heatsink to what they were from the factory is something to watch-out for.

Otherwise, I'm kinda stumped.

(and you can see why I never mess with the thermal compound on a GPU - I'd be worried about making it worse! Heh.)

I learned my lesson real quick quantum. I was trying to avoid it as much as possible, but after letting XFX know about my temps their response was basically either change the TIM yourself or send it in to be looked at. I figured what could I lose... I guess I didn't think of my sanity *pulls hair out*

Listen up *******, AS5 is CAPACITIVE, it is not CONDUCTIVE!

I've used in on every GPU I've owned and it hasn't killed anything, because it can't. You still don't want to get it on any PCB traces though.

That's not applicable to gpus because they are under spring tension. You get the screws tight enough to get the springs to push on the pcb.

Like I wrote way back man, if you can't get a good application, just spread it on with a credit card. It shouldn't be this hard, at least enough to warrant as many posts as you've gotten. The other thing, I hate as5 ofr a variety of reasons, but right now the main one for you is it's viscosity. It's damn thick and if you don't soften it first then spreading is a good way of getting even application.
