Question about Voltage & failing core Prime95 / AMD 555 BE

Thread Starter
Hi, new to overclocking so I do have a few questions.

I have a 555 which I stressed for 12hrs at 3.8GHz so I figured I'd try 4GHz (multiplier of 20). Temperatures are very low (probably room temp or close to) and under load (i.e.: prime95 torture test) , it reaches 25-28. Voltage is set to "auto" in the bios. Two concerns:

At idle, I see the voltage fluctuating. Is this because it's set to auto in the bios, or is there something wrong here?

When I run Prime95's torture at 4GHz, eventually one of the cores errors out with "hardware error". The logs report a rounding error. Specs:

AM3 555 BE 3.2GHz running @ 4GHz
2GB of DDR2 400MHz ram
Asus M2A-VM AM2+ mobo

Obviously I'm very interested in upgrading my mobo and my RAM asap. In fact, I've already bought 4GB of Corsair Dominator ram, I'm just saving up for a mobo :>

Hey, try to disable Amd qool n quiet in the BIOS

I am using Gigabyte board , in my case the solution was to disable Hardware Thermal Monitor , which lowers Voltages when idle

Also , set CPU voltages manually . Try at 1.4V with 4Ghz
I am running X2 555BE too . Was able to reach stable 4Ghz at 1.360V .
After what time Prime95 gives you error ?

It usually errored out within the first 2 minutes or so.

C &Q already disabled but thanks for the tip. I'll have to double-check to see if there's a thermal mon and I'll try manually setting the voltage as you suggested and report back later

What are Voltages your motherboard set as auto ?

And what cooling solutions are You using. Those temps seems unbelivable low.
Which program do You use to check temps ?

Btw. I am using Arctic Freezer Extreme Rev.2

Temps are 45-46 C max after priming it for abot 7 hours at 4ghz 1.36V

Indeed the voltage is set to auto.

With regards to my temp readings:

Both CoreTemp and CPU-Z give similar temp readings. My config is:

Corsair 600T
2 x 120mm Enermax apollish vegas fans on top configured as exhaust
1 x 200mm Corsair fan intake (front)
CPU cooler is a Corsair H80. It comes with 2 x 120mm fan and a radiator which are mounted at the back the case. On the inside, I've got the radiator against the case and the fan on top of it pulling from the rad and on the outside of the case I've got another 120mm fan pushing into the radiator so that cool air is pushed in the case.

With my stock CPU cooler and an enermax apollish instead of the 2 x120mm fans at the back of my case, prime95 (OC'ed @ 3.8GHz) would bring the temp of my CPU at 45c. Since upgrading the cooling instead of the previous 45c running prime95 it stays under 30

Well You have some decent cooling system , jelous

So, how its going with OC ?
I've asked you for voltages on auto , what are they ?
If Prime95 gives you error that fast i assume that CPU needs more Vcore.
Give a try at 1.4V it shoul be fine, but the major factor is OC potential of your chip. Also What is speed of NB ?

actually no. you are pushing cold air into your radiator not your case.
thats still an unbelievable temp, mid/upper-mid 20's under load.. congrats on a great chip.

you'll need to get off the auto settings, read up on phenom II overclocking and your mobo specs and set your voltages manually. You'll also need to read up on CPU-NB frequency, FSB and HT.
