Looking for help overclocking e8600

Thread Starter
Hi I've been gaming a long time without any knowledge of how my computer actually works. I bought an e8600 wolfdale a while back and now it seems to be a bit outdated(struggling in bad company 2 and newer games a bit) I also have no clue how to properly match my memory to fsb etc. I'm looking for an enthusiast who would be willing to walk me through getting maximum performance from my pc. Specs are 750iftw mobo 3.33ghz e8600 wolfdale ati 4850 video card. 3 gigs of ddr2 corsair ram. I've been told this processor is very good for overclocking(4+ on air alone) Something to do with eo stepping I believe. If interested please leave a message. Brand new to site I dont know if I have pms setup.

this is a very basic explanation of overclocking

its basic maths. your E8600 is rated at 1333mhz. you always divide this number by 4 so 1333/4= 333, this is your fsb. (or cpu frequency)
then your processor (cpu) has a multiplier (or may say cpu ratio) of 10
so 333 x 10 = 3300mhz or 3.3GHz

boot into bios, disable speedstep and C1e and any other energy saving features.
Unlink ram, so it stays st stock speed, this means adjust the memory mulitiplier so it dispalys the stock speed of ram, eg, 800mhz, 667mhz etc....

can you raise the fsb? yours is now 333. try rising it to 350
boot into windows
download realtemp and coretemp (google them)
install and run them
then download intel burn test (ibt) and run it.
have a look in task manager and notice how much free ram is listed.

in ibt set threads to 2 (for 2 cores) and then click on custom ram and enter an amount just below the free amount.
eg. i have 2520mb free ram. so i enter 2500 into the custom ram.
run the test for 5 passes.
keep an eye on temps (do not let it go over 60.c, max temp is 71.c)

if test runs fine, go back into bios, and change frequency (fsb) to 370 and repeat the tests.
keep doing this in 20mhz steps until windows will not boot. then just go back a step (remove 20 from the fsb) to the last stable frequency,
or
just raise the cpu voltage a couple of levels. it should now boot.
its a balancing act, higher voltages will get you higher fsb, but it will also give you higher temps.
the E8600 is safe upto 1.36v

if unsure about IBT, do an overnight run of prime95, large fft's test, also to test for stability

the trick is to do this step by step,

get the cpu maxed before increasing the ram speed

also if going down this route, please get a proper cpu cooler.
as temps will limit how high you can overclock.
