The difference with that method is the fact you only need internet once, to activate. The new DRM is that you need to have an active internet connection at all times, if your connection drops, so does your singleplayer game.

Can you imagine being on campus, with no internet (or blocked ports) and because of that not being able to play a singleplayer game?
The internet activation is not the problem, it's the "always-online-while-playing-even-singleplayer" that gets people.

I know that, I was commenting on the Ubisoft DRM somebody talked about.

Really, if it is that big of a deal you either need to

1) Get an apartment off campus
2) Go to a college with internet
3) Play a different game

Ubisoft DRM had the same principle, with the Assassin's Creed series (except the first one) and the Settlers 7.
They were, only later, patched with a one time activation at boot.
Driver: SA will again introduce "always on" DRM

REALLY?! -- Those are your "not big of a deal solutions? Your solutions are a bit too drastic to simply play a game, and no, I don't purchase a game, simply to play another because I am not allowed to play offline, that's just rediculous.
Simply put, people should just, move to a different region because of some form of DRM? Just. Wow.

Or they can just play a different game. Companies aren't going to cater to minorities. So you need to solve the problem yourself, this is 2011, not gaming companies fault you live somewhere that internet is blocked off or not there.

So having two game clients is a problem because you don't want to have two completely free game clients installed. But telling people to go to different college or buy an apartment to play diablo 3 is a completely reasonable solution and everyone who doesn't have exactly the same situation as you is a minority whiner who should shut up and deal with it?

Capcom did the same with SFIV but later removed the feature. While in offline mode you could choose only half the characters, with the latest patch you can now choose all the characters.

I am sure Blizzard will remove that option

You have been spamming this entire thread with comments on other peoples lives. Thus your lack of firsthand experience of what you criticize is fair game (A few summers does not constitute a four year career at college). Btw if your so keen on how people should optimally use their time, why are you still wasting time posting here? Shouldn't you be out making millions?

This whole issue reeks of the realID system on the forums. They claimed it was to stop trolls, but really it was to transition their games into the social media scene with facebook. And of course people saw threw the deceit since it would would not have solved anything, and actually caused more problems with privacy.

Same story today, they claim it's to stop pirating, but we know it hurts legit players and increases pirating. I think the real goal is similar to their other initiatives, they want to have social media to be streamlined into their games. They want a piece of the facebook realm, since that is the reigning king of taking up people's time and attention.

I am just sick of being lied to on why they implement these systems. Why people support hurting themselves, other players and the gaming industry. And why more don't see the major distraction with claiming this is a crusade against troll and pirates.

Blizzard can't remove the online requirement. How the items drop is similar to how items are dropped in WoW. It is all controlled by the server, and that information is sent to the clients. Now unless they added just an offline mode, with offline characters (highly unlikely) then they will not remove it.

IMO requiring a internet connection all the time to play it isn't a huge issue, unless you live at a place that blocks the ports that are needed. Due to them adding a real cash auction house, this type of networking set up is needed.

From D3's Twitter:
Quote:
Correct, it's a client/server based architecture (not too unlike World of Warcraft) so it will be online-only.
I think the two main pros of requiring the active internet connection are:

1. You can play by yourself, and use the loot you found to play online with others
2. Item dup hacks won't ruin both auction houses

And the cons:

1. If you don't have an internet connection you can't play single player
2. Pirated copies can't play online?.......

For the majority of people the pros out way the cons. Just pretend that D3 is an MMO. You don't see many people complaining that they can't play WoW by themselves without an internet connection.

Now before people say that D3 isn't an MMO, they would be correct. It isn't a traditional style MMO, BUT there are a lot of other games that are similar in how they require an internet connection. An example of this is Guild Wars. When you leave the outposts it is all instanced, but you still need an internet connection.
