CPU Cooler for ASUS P8Z68 Deluxe

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I've been trying to put together a new computer for weeks now, but it seems my setup is utterly jinxed. There's always another problem showing up at the last minute before a build could be finalized.

The latest one is the combination I had in mind for the motherboard and the CPU cooler. As already stated, I'm going for an ASUS P8Z68 Deluxe board, and initially I wanted to use a Scythe Mugen 2 Rev.B PCGH Edition, but due to some problems with the store, I had to cancel the order and start over at another retailer. Unfortunately, this one didn't have the PCGH Edition, so instead I picked the Scythe Mugen 2 Rev.B SCMG-2100.

However, I now received an email from their support, telling me that the tech guys noticed a problem with this combo. Apparently, there's a capacitor on the backside which prevents the fastening of the backplate.

As a replacement, they suggested the EKL Alpenföhn "Brocken", which made its first appearance back in April 2009, and seems to be only used in the German-speaking area.

I'm not quite sure what to think about that one, but before I tell the store to go ahead and use it, I'd rather ask what any Z68 Deluxe users have mounted on their boards.

Keep in mind that I post this in the Air Cooling sub-forum, so I don't really look for water-cooled solutions.

i suggest noctua nh-d14. though i am not an owner of the board you have, noctua specified that their cooler is compatible with your mobo

Yes, the NH-D14 was on my list from the start, but I switched to the Scythe because it was only half as expensive. Guess I'll go back to the undisputed cooler king and pay the difference.

+Rep for the find.

A Thermalright Venomous X with two good fans (GT AP15's) is a very good cooling solution for SB chips and mobos. I'm not a huge fan of the gigantic coolers.

If you insist on a giant cooler, IMHO the Silver Arrow is the best choice and quieter than the D14 too.

For something slightly better than the Venomous X without the giant size and RAM slot blocking of the SA look into the Archon. It uses TY-140 fans which are very quiet and it's tall rather than long so your RAM slots are clear.

I don't think the Archon is that much better than the VenX. It is a good cooler, just not sure if it's worth the extra cost since Sandy Bridge oc'ing is usually so chip dependent. If the chip can do 5 GHz, the VenX can cool it more than enough usually.

It's not just about cooling. It's also about noise and clearance but yes the Archon's price would not be justified based purely on its stock cooling performance.

@Sheyster: According to Thermalright's website, the Venomous X doesn't seem to be compatible with the Deluxe board, but the Silver Arrow does. Hitting up some reviews, it seems it even beats the Noctua. And it's also 10 Euros cheaper... guess we've found our winner.

@TFL Replica: It seems the RAM slot is only blocked if you have it mounted so that the air is pushed upwards. If you have the air moved to the rear, the RAM slot remains free.
