Antec Kuhler h20 620 mounted on GTX465/GTX470 gtx480, gtx580, etc. $62, 47c furmark

It's hot so you need to watercool that fermi on the cheap! I like these all in one watercooled units because they are maintenance free, cost effective, and do not compromise on performance. Antec 620 is like the corsair h50, h60, h70, h80, h100, etc. I think a full waterblock would cost $100, then a radiator, $50, then tubing, $20, reservoir, $20…fittings…$20…pump...$80...does it end? This costs you only $62 to cool your gpu...

Alright this is my version of the Antec 620 mount on a pny GTX465(unlocked to a gtx470). This method should work with a gtx470 as it is basically the same lay out, and would probably work on the 480/560/580, etc. you would probably just have to see what the hole spacing is on different cards...but in this case the gtx465/gtx470 is the example. This method probably voids your warranty as I mod the stock unisink in this.

I got my pny gtx465 at newegg for $97 so I didn't care, and my warranty is only 30 days. Provided you have a drill, and drill bits on hand, this mod should cost you $62. $60 for the antec 620, and $2 for all necessary hardware. For the bracket you could just use some scrap metal. I found a random bracket in the junk pile that lined up perfectly, I just needed to make the screw holes bigger.

What you need:

1. Drill and a 1/8 drill bit to make the screw holes/enlarge existing holes.
2. 4x40 screws (1 and 3/4 inch in length)
3. 4 bolts for the screws, and 4 plastic washers

hardwaret.jpg

4. One "lying around cpu bracket you never used" or make one from sheet metal/scrap metal. It needs 60mm spacing between the screw holes. If you don't have an existing bracket with that spacing you are going to have to mark the holes you need to drill yourself. Use the 1/8 drill bit to drill the holes. As long as it's rigid enough, it will work. Don't want it too thick though as the screw length is just enough. You also have to shape it so that it doesn't get in the way of the tubing from the 620. So a star shape or "X" shape would work just fine. Something like this in the picture below…or a shape like the one I used when I mounted mine.

5. Antec 620 watercool system

Once you got your bracket with the correct size holes and spacing it's simple:

1. Remove the stock cpu heat sink and discard or mail it to Nvidia telling them it wasn't good enough. Remove unisink that cools the vrms, memory chips, etc. Probably can find a guide somewhere. You are going to mod the unisink a little bit by using a 1/8 size drill bit to make these four holes bigger so that your screws can slide through:

heatsinkdrillholes.jpg

2. Once that's done, reinstall the unisink.

3. Now slide the four screws through the four holes making sure to use a plastic washer.

fourscrewsprotruding.jpg

4. Apply thermal paste, then Mount the Antec 620 on the GPU. *Secure the bolts by hand tightening only* - You don't need it that tight.

Done.

Finished product:

donecloseup.jpg

Some preliminary temps.

Idle core clock 51mhz: 33c-34c - with the stock cpu cooler it was 56-60c
Idle core clock 405mhz: 35-36c - with stock cpu cooler - 60-72c

idletempantec620gtx470.jpg

GPU temps after furmark for 6 minutes: Stayed around 46-47c. With stock cooling this was in the 90s and the stock fan was unbearably loud.

furmark6mins.jpg

Overall, really happy with the temps and it's quiet.

ONE LAST FYI

I've been told that the stock plate that cools the vrms, etc. might not be adequate for cooling without the stock shroud, so it would behoove you to mount a 120mm fan to blow over the top side of the card, especially if you have bad air flow in your case like mine.

Wow. Only thing I can say right now.
Do you think you could do this mod to almost any GPU with a similar setup?

I think so. Maybe on some cards you'd have to use other means to cool the vrms, and memory chips however. I know with the gtx580, gtx480, gtx470, and 465 it's doable.

If you could find a way to mount the cooling shroud back on you could have even more epic cooling, either way those are some amazing results nice work thumb.gif

I'm leaving the stock cooling shroud alone, lol. I just wanted this thing to be a lot quieter. Oh I should mention I'm using two fans on the rad...push-pull.

Amazing work. Somebody out there, should produce some backplates for all major Fermi cards....that way we don't have to try to custom make one if we're uncomfortable with metal working. smile.gif I like this though, I might do this on my 580 (and SLI in the future + 460). Definitely beats doing a custom loop.

EDIT:
Also, I would recommend you watermark ALL of your images very well. Remove your old ones and reupload the watermarked ones. I'd hate to see your idea ripped off. smile.gif

I believe a long time ago someone made a backplate/hold down for an H70 on an ATI GPU. He sold them for $8 shipped.
