Ordering a overclocked gamer pc

Thread Starter
I have been looking at ordering the following comp where the website does a 20% overcloak. The comp is going to be mainly for gaming.

The below is the cut and paste. I am looking at way sto save some money to make it so I can add an SSD. I was looking at building myself but have never overclocked a machine and dont want to mess it up to much.

One question I have is if I switch the memory from 16mb to their 4 and order online 16 megs of ram that saves $100 min if I go on newegg.com. Since the comp will be set with overclocking would be swapping out the memory cause problems. Or since I am having them doing the overclocking am I better off with having everything I want done with them?

Dont buy it prebuilt. Get all the parts from that order and buy them yourself. Welcome to OCN.

sandybridge processors are a lot easier to OC than the past processors; locked bus and all you have to do is increase the multiplier

but if you feel uncomfortable OCing yourself, you still have options, build the computer yourself and find a local business to OC for you, most likely you'll still be saving some money building yourself.

also you are adding a lot of parts in there that are unnecessary unless you REALLY want them RIGHHHT NOW.

things such as the blu ray player, you can find a deal online for a lot cheaper than what the site is selling it to you for, just go with a 24x dvd drive for now and wait on the blu ray. (-$50)

16gb 4x4 vengeance do you really need 16gb? what are you using the computer for? I have 16gb of vengeance for HD video/photo editing but running sc2 and bfbc2 at the same time with a firefox on and multiple monitoring programs dont use up 8gb of my RAM. (-$50 to $100)

is there an option to not add a video card? you can probably find them a bit cheaper on newegg.com (-$20 to $50)

1000w psu? why do you need 1000 watts i have a similar rig but with hd 6970, i7-2600k, 1TB WD caviar black, 64gb zalman ssd, 2 dvd drives 8 fans and my 800w psu is fine (-$10 to $30)

do you really need network card? there should be integrated one on motherboard
(-$10 to $20)

maybe cut down on the monitor? theres a nice ASUS 24" monitor 2ms for around 200 or less so you'd be saving a good $100+ i would assume (-$100)

there are some ideas, if you are willing to hold off a little

Thanks for the information guys.

The website has a promotion to get the blue ray for free.

I am going to be gaming on it hardcore. My current comp only has 3 megs and i wanted to get alot so I dont have to worry about upgrading it. Ya I saw on newegg you can get 8 megs of vengeance for $50

Ya i saw cheaper video cards online.

The power supply was buy the 750 get an upgrade to $1000

The network card was a free upgrade.

Monitor was buy 24" for $239 get a upgrade to 27" for free.

Another question. If I go with the SSD drive whats the best size to get for having OS and 2-3 games load off it?

I just might have to build it and come here for help to overclock.

Don't buy it prebuilt, because you're going to miss the fun part (building the pc yourself)

Overpriced. Too much RAM, overpowered PSU, under-performing CPU cooler.

Every single person here will tell you to buy your parts separately. And I agree. You get exactly what you want. And you don't have to deal with customer service; OCN is the best form of customer service on the planet.

You can save a ton building it yourself, and down grading your ram, mobo, and psu.

make it yourself,
get 4gb or MAX 8gb memory, a gamer will not need more than 4gb memory
get a better cpu cooler
get a 650w psu or something

Please don't buy prebuilt. I learned my lesson and you can get so much more if you buy the stuff yourself. Also 16gb is major overkill for just gaming. I have 8gb of ram but haven't put it all in my motherboard and am running 4gb right now with no problem at all. No point in 16 just get 8
