I need help!

I just started folding a few days ago on the machine listed below. Right now it's just a stock clock so I am only running -smp 5. If I go higher than that my core temps go up over 74 C degrees. Tomorrow I am installing my watercooling. After that is installed I am overclocking as high as my chip will do for a 24/7 stable clock. I am hoping for 4.8ghz.

Ok so where I get confused is the whole smp vs. bigadv. So if I want to also do bigadv work units I just need to add the bigadv tag to the shortcut and that's it? I already have Ubuntu on a flash drive, would it be better for me to run a VM with Linux running bigadv?

I am also folding with my GPU as well. Right now my GPU pulls about 16k PPD and my CPU running SMP pulls in 10k PPD. Does that seem about right for my hardware?

I have been searching and looking through guides and I can't seem to find what I am looking for. Anyone care to help me get on track?

Also this is my work computer so it will be folding 24/7 but I do work with SolidWorks and Photoshop a lot. So I need to make sure I am still allowing those programs enough computing power to not make them run like crap.

Well, your CPU is definitely capable of doing -bigadv (though probably best to wait until you can use all cores/threads), but you'd first need to complete 10 normal SMP WUs. Once you've done that, you'll qualify for the bonus points. After that, you just add -bigadv to the end of the Target field.

Yes, a Linux VM would give better performance. The -bigadv Folding core on Linux is about 15% better than the Windows version.

16k sounds a bit low for the 580... is it also at stock? If so, then it's about right. CPU will obviously be better once -bigadv is being done.

Also, even if you use all threads, if another program (SolidWorks/PhotoShop) needs the CPU, the Folding process will throttle back. However, if you're doing a low of SW/PS work, you might lower Folding performance so much you might not be able to complete -bigadv WUs. You may want to keep an eye on that when you first try it out (or post here and we'll help).

Would running a Linux VM of -bigadv while running -smp through windows be a bad idea?

Ok one more question. I also have a G5 tower that is a Power PC. Stanford still has the client download available and I downloaded it today but it gives me a connection error. Anyone know anything about setting up the F@H on PPC mac's? Or is it still even supported?

If it's still on the download page, it's still active, so will be getting some WUs. However, there aren't many v6 client WUs for OSX; most have moved to v7. Either give that a try, or ask the question here, where they can give a better answer:
