SQL Database...HELP?!

Thread Starter
Hello all,

Looking for some help here with making a database for our computer inventory in our University. I've been recommended to steer away from MS Access and go for a SQL database but to be honest, I've never worked with such a thing. Is it possible to be able to find some books, tutorials, etc. and learn just enough to be able to make a database to organize our inventory. If so could you guys give me some directions on where to start on learning how to make such an application.

All we are looking to do is keep a good record of: assigned users, room numbers, model numbers, serial numbers, asset tags, and a few other categories.

Any additional information you may need feel free to ask, or any additional information you would like to add because I don't know much about what to do at this point. Thanks.

sqlteam.com <-- excellent resource for SQL stuff.

Also, SQL Books Online.

But... I gotta say, if you're not familiar with SQL (yet), it's not a horrible thing to work in MS Access. You need a front-end, after all.

Also, if you're at a University I'm sure there's books in the library and bookstore for SQL you can check out.

roleki's links are a good starting out point also

I've used the Teach Yourself SQL in 10 minutes book, pretty quick rundown if you know what you want the querys to do

Crap, now that I think about it, if you're absolutely uninterested in learning SQL outside of this project, go get Spiceworks. It's free, and does a fairly good job of asset tracking.
