Speakers or headphones for gaming/music?/need a sound card

Thread Starter
I know headphones lets you hear footsteps and what not, but which one will produce better audio in a racing game, music, and BC2?

Not sure which speaker to choose but, it must not be USB and can only be 2.1 setup. Do speakers have good sound stage?

As for headphones, it must have good sound stage, and will sound good on a iPod without a amp pushing it, must be very comfy and not strain my head during 5 hour gaming sessions.

Will Swan M10's do the job? Soundcard or amp? Will a Xonar STX match my Audio Research amp (it is only for analog though)?

Music I listen to:
lots of: indie, rock, electronic, alt, jazz, classical
little bit of: dnb, house, pop and rap music

Swan m10s have a mid-woofer, and it gives precise, punchy bass. It is by no means overwhelming or that "boomy". However, they are great speakers and their mids and highs can beat the promedia 2.1s. Great clarity, seperation, and soundstage. Otherwise if you want lots of bass then promedia 2.1s are the way to go.

As for headphones, how much to you want to spend? Under $100 the best gaming headphone is the AD700, with an amazing soundstage for gaming, but little to no bass. They are great for competitive play. If you want more bass, then either the ath-m50s (good for music, bad for gaming), or the Ultrasone hfi580/550/dj1/alienware ozma 5 (all the same, just rebrands). The ultrasones are at $120ish and give great bass (more than m50), while their S-logic drives gives a really good soundstage for gaming.

For soundcard: 0-$60 Asus DX/D1 $60-100 Auzentech Forte $100-$140 Titanium HD
$150+ Xonar STX or Omega Claro Plus

If you want immersive sound from speakers, you'll have to position them around you, so make sure you have the shelf space for multiple speakers stationed at your front, sides, and rear. As you can see, this approach will cost you a good amount of money, so you're probably better off getting a nice set of headphones with a wide soundstage.

As far as your music tastes go, it seems like you'll need something with good bass, which the AD700 will not provide. At the same time, you'll want a wide soundstage to get good positional audio for your games. Two headphones come to mind for this -- the Ultrasone PRO 550 as mentioned above and the Beyerdynamic DT770. The PRO 550 costs $140 and the DT770 about $170.

The pro550s might not be better than the hfi580/550/dj1s. It depends on what the OP wants. If its a wider soundstage for gaming, then pro 550, but if he wants more bass then probably the hfis/dj1/ozma. However you can't go wrong with either.

But you would need an amp for Dt770s to shine, and then thats more money...

As a cheapo 2.0 user (most stuff used cept amp), i am very happy with it but i dun game much so i dun miss the sub that much and am loving the clarity of vocals, separation and detail proper 2.0 stuff adds over PC speakers hehe IMO there is no point going cheap PC 2.1 and get a proper/dedicated sub. These come at least $70-100 (Dayton and Polk the usual suspects) for small/medium rooms or maybe cheaper if u dip in the used market
