im looking to buy an SSD

Thread Starter
I have a couple basic newb SSD questions, ive googled a bit and lurked in this particular section of OCN lately to try to inform myself but there's so much new info i want to run things by you folks first.

First of all, I'm primarily a gamer, currently running Win 7 64 and Games/Apps off my RAID 0 array of 2 WD 320 GB 7,200 rpm drives.

im thinking of gettin a Crucial M4 and doing a clean install of Win 7. The RAID array ill then wipe and use as the storage location for games.

with all that in mind, will my only net benefit be really fast boot? im guessing my game loading times will stay about the same if the data is on the RAID of my old HDs. correct me if im wrong.

here's the ssd im looking at:
Crucial M4 CT064M4SSD2
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820148441

i see theres also the Crucial M4 CT064M4SSD2CCA, what the hell is the difference? its like $20 more but seems identitical

Don't think there will be a difference. Just get the cheaper one.
I have the cheaper one, it works great and its a big upgrade over any mechanical HDD.

Maybe this is what the other one has.

on newegg it says Data Transfer Kit includes: Cloning Software for PC and Mac, USB to SATA cable

I know my m4 didn't come with any software or any cables.

ya must be those extras adding to the cost. my next question is for those with 64 Gb drives, how much free space do you have and what do you most frequently use thats installed on the ssd?

My M4 had a total of 59GBs to work. I don't know how much space windows took up by itself but I have a total of 18gbs used on my drive with 41gbs still free.

I have
Windows 7 installed
All Drivers
Steam with one game (BFBC2)
Firefox

My windows folder says 11gbs.

I just use my ssd to for booting and whatever game I'm currently playing most often otherwise I use steam mover to move it to my other drive.

cool. ugh, im so hesitant to pull the trigger, these things are advancing so fast and i feel like the price will probably drop the minute AFTER i buy. i know this is the general plight of technology, but anyone know if theres going to be a major change up? any reason to hold out? anything new and awesome on the horizon this summer for SSDs?

SandForce drives just came out at the beginning of Summer. The m4 and the vertex 3 drives are your best bet right now - nothing 'just' on the horizon, but you know technology. Give it a year and something newer and better will be out. For now, I think this is a good upgrade for you.

You will notice a slight speed-up in launching windows, but if you go with just a 64gb drive, you probably won't be loading it up with applications, and opting to use your RAID drive like you said, so most of your apps will probably 'feel' about the same.

Take some time to optimize the drive after you install it. Make sure to install it in AHCI mode, make sure to disable some of the non-ssd friendly settings. There are some awesome guides here if you need some help.

I say pull the trigger! Happy shopping!

thanks for the info so far everyone. i think ill go for it.

now that im running my i5-2500k @ 5.0 Ghz and have my shiny new Asus GTX 570 direct cu II, the bottleneck of my HDs is very noticeable , i hate booting to desktop only to wait for so longggg watching the HD activity indicator solid and hearing the drives groan away. so lame. once im up and running everything runs fast enough.
