Need a gaming keyboard under $80

I don't mind mechanical as long as the keys aren't too loud (meaning no Razer Blackwidow). Preferably backlit. I will be doing a lot of typing for school on the keyboard as well.

The 6Gv2 is on sale for $70 at the Steelseries store, so it seems nice. I am debating between this one or the G110. The Sidewinder X4 seems good too.

What would you guys recommend?

whaaat? where is the 6gv2 listed for $70? I think that would be an awesome deal. I check the steelseries store but its at $99 right now. I think if you can get it for 70 that would be an awesome deal. I've owned the sidewinder x4 before and its a pretty decent keyboard. The back lighting is really weak on it in my opinion. Unless you have the lights turned off it looks pink not red.

I missed my media keys for about a week or two. I learned to live without them pretty quickly. I think you'll love the upgrade. I have a das ultimate silent now at work and can't imagine using something else here all day long. Very nice upgrade.

On the other hand, I still have a Logitech G19 at home and have been hesitant to upgrade for the set of games that I play. I really like the macro system, the customizable backlighting, and the LCD screen when I'm in eyefinity mode - I can control ventrilo/etc without alt-tabbing out, as well as toggle between my MSI Afterburner/HWMonitor display to check out my temps. I can't imagine losing that in my setup at home. After a long day at work, I do hate coming home to squishy keys, but the other benefits far outweigh the 5 minutes it takes me to get used to my squishy keys again.

Short version: Go for it if you won't miss the extra non-mechanical benefits, otherwise, maybe look at the logitech boards for their extra features.

I'm pretty sure a Logitech G15 is under 80$

If you're going to spend close to $100 on a keyboard, please PLEASE don't waste money on anything not mechanical.

The 6gv2 is a great keyboard for gaming (Cherry MX-Black keyswitches), and obviously you can type on it too. That being said, you're going to type a lot in school, so I honestly prefer keyboards targeted for typers but game well as well. I'd look for anything with a Cherry MX-Brown keyswitch. Spend the extra $20 for a Das Professional Silent with free shipping or go with something from XArmor for a cheaper selection.

"Waste"? How is buying a non-mechanical keyboard a waste of money?

It's a matter of preference for gaming, and typing .... but mechanical keyboards will last 20 times longer at least. So are getting your money's worth when spending a hundred or more with a mechanical.
