Do I need a 6870?

Thread Starter
Hey there,

The time has finally come - At the end of this month - for me to finally upgrade my Graphics Card!
I don't want to play the most Graphically demanding games in the world, there will be no Crysis/Metro 2033/Witcher - ing necessary.

I mostly would like to play games such as Dawn of War II/Battle Forge/Starcraft II/Sacred II and Diablo 3, when they finally release it.
I'm not on an unlimited budget, so that Rules out the 69xx series, which leaves me with the 68xx cards.

Do I need a 6870?
Or should I be fine with a 6850, as if I wanted to upgrade in the future, I could comfortably run crossfire 6850's on my 650W PSU? - I imaginable I'd be pushing it with Crossfire 6870's.

Any recommendations would be appreciated

The 6850 is a soldi midrange card I would say, so good choice for midrange gaming. I dont think a 6870 is needed, the 6850 will be just fine for what your looking for, you dont really need super high frame rates to play diablo and the like. I found a page that may be helpful to you here. This site (Guru3d.com) is great for crossfire reviews and things like that. If you read into it, it says you need about a 700 watt power supply to run crossfire 6870s and a 650w will power crossfire 6850s, so you should be good with your power supply if you ever decide to crossfire, hope this helps mate

EDIT: There actually should be some Metro 2033-ing going on...great game

The HD6870 has a 151w TDP (versus 127w TDP for the HD6850), so you should be able to run 2 in Crossfire just fine with your high quality PSU.

With technology advancing so fast, and with 28nm AMD GPU's probably coming out in the next two months, GPU tech is going to become outdated very soon.

I would personally get the fully fledged HD6870 is you can afford it, it will last you longer.

Cheers!

I say go for the 6870 and yes you can crossfire 2 6870s on a 650w psu especially the one you have. 2 6870s will beat 2 460s in SLI.
Well I have a 6870 and it runs BC2 at maximum possible settings with highest AA and AF at 1080p and I get 50-70 FPS.

Extremely good GPU and overclocks great. Mine is still at stock voltage and I am running it at 985/1150

This card ^^

*Deleted link for fear of fake predatory website*

~£100 and gives you performance overclocked that will match a stock 6870.

Be sure to get the "vanilla" version, the factory overclocked one is the worse card (lower quality VRM - you cannot adjust voltage so overclock is seriously limited)

Great card, and two will run off your PSU in crossfire no problem. Crossfire 6850's overclocked will beat SLI 460's overclocked in most situations, and will outperform a 5970 convincingly.

With one, I can run 95% of games @ 1080p maxed (excluding AA but AF included) and am happy with the performance. For the other 5% its only adjusting a couple of settings slightly lower. For 90% of all games, you can run them maxed out WITH AA perfectly.

/End thread.

I guess the real question is what else will be in your system and how much you will overclock. If you have just the crossfired cards and a lower end CPU, im sure there wouldnt be a problem. If youre planning to overclock the GPUs and your CPU (especially adding volts), and you have multiple hard drives and things, then it may not be such a good idea.

Get a 560 Ti or 6950, your board only supports x16/x4. If you do go CFX there will be diminishing returns.

Even with 480s the FPS didnt diminish much

Average Frames, Metro 2033, 2560x1600
SLI with 16x/16x - 42.4
SLI with 4x/4x - 41.0

@ OP the concept is simple, when you're buying anything for a computer, buy the absolute best that your budget allows. It will last long, you will be more satisfied, and it will have a higher resell value down the road if you decide to get rid of it.
