Hey ive got windows 7 64 bit and im having some interesting things happen

ill be surfing the web on firefox, then out of nowhere it will close, and no more programs will start. Then it will start shutting down background programs saying stuff about compatibility errors.

at that point, the only program that works is windows internet explorer 64bit

what?? anyone have a clue what is going on?

if it helps i have it in test mode so that i could get atitools working

I highly doubt that the problem lies within Windows 7 64bit.
There might be some under lying issues.

Bad RAM? HDD? Do some checks.
If worse comes to worse then a clean install of the OS would be in order.

i know memtest is best for RAM but is there another good program? i sure hope my RAM isnt bad because i JUST bought the sticks, and i bought them ironically to avoid having issues (random customer at microcenter said kingston is fairly reliable)

as for HDD i can see this...its an older 250GB IDE drive....any good software for checking HDDs?

I have only used MemTest, so I don't have any recommendations there.
But for the HDD, CrystalDiskInfo or HDTune would do.

ok, not too many issues, except for my storage drive but i knew it was failing..

i guess ill check the ram, if anything i can take it back

Also I see you have an unlocked cpu. How confident are you that it is unlocked and stable? Unlocked cpu's can cause some weird problems.

Sounds a lot like a RAM issue. I once had a PC doing the same thing, and I ended up backing everything up and reformatting only for it to still do it! If I did a MEMtest right at the start I would have seem the RAM was trashed. So one learns

it seems fairly stable. The issue with it locking up from all programs but internet explorer 64 bit has only happened once.

however, ive noticed that when i overclock it to 3.6 with the multiplier it acts funky with some games. So far its messed up street fighter 4 and duke nukem forever...

pretty tragically too...lots of screeching and the screen getting garbled up with blue and red

though the duke nukem forever may have been the 4870x2...i accidentally left it running in 50% fan speed but once i take it to 3.5 i have no stability problems

the thing that throws me off is that it only happens occasionally and some programs still work. Just not firefox, regular internet explorer, itunes, steam, and xfire. Those programs shut off pretty quick

Have you tested your unlock and especially your unlocked OC's with a stability program like Intel burn test or Prime 95? I suggest first download ITB and try to run 5 passes on high. You probably will fail.
