Samsung Spinpoint F3 1Tb reliability? - Page 3

They had a bit more sequential performance, but WD Blacks seek faster.

pioneerisloud is correct - as an OS drive, the WD Black 1TB's are indeed faster. If the price difference isn't much (which is to say, he can't find a great deal on the F3's), he should definitely get a Black.

They used to suck. The F3's were their first very reliable drives in a long time.

But with the current revision, the WD Black is a faster all around drive, sequential, access times, and random reads / writes (the only thing they used to lose in was sequential before).

And seeing as how the OP might be paying extra costs due to extra shipping to get the F3 from the states, the WD Black might just be the better bang for his buck option, especially considering its the faster drive anyway.
Good advice.

I think he means as an OS drive. Obviously RAID-0 F3's are going to have pretty awesome file copy speeds, and are ideal for FRAPS recording and other sequential tasks.

But RAID hardly boosts 4k and 64K speeds - an area where the WD Blacks already had a large headstart.

I checked my Firefox cache folder... most files are 52-64K in size.

For an OS drive? They're not quite as fast. Seek times are too high.

What's your current drive? If that's what you've got access too, it'll probably still be a huge gain.

Yes, that was a long time ago. Hitachi makes some pretty good drives now. But on topic, the F3 is awesome!
If you look at my signature, you can see I have 2 F3s, and from first hand experience I tell you they are the most reliable HDD I've ever had.

Never experienced a single problem.
Ugh, Am I the only person who has bad experiences with HDDs ? XD
I love Seagate, always have done, and I've never lost a Seagate yet (my current boot is a Seagate and functions perfectly)
I have a a Seagate 500GB and 2TB, and Samsung 1TB and 2TB.
I've only ever lost 1 Samsung drive, so I can't fault them there.
Never lost a Seagate.
Never had a problem with an Hitachi (but avoided deathstars)
I will NEVER buy a Maxtor/WD drive again. I've probably lost a total of 9/10 drives to Maxtor and WD. I currently have a 1TB W/D (External) thats still running at the moment, but It's backed up to an old Seagate I don't use. T_T

But yeah, Samsung has improved over the years and I'd recommend them fully for any newbuild. Or an SSD.. But I haven't had one yet to play around with :'3

I looked into the F3 sometime ago and found some bad reviews, bearing in mind that a lot of the review written on commercial sites are only for the bad few. If you look on forums like this one you get a better review because people will write about something whether it's good or bad!
All drives seem to be pot luck these days, every range will have a bad batch but when you consider how many the manufacturers are pushing out, it's acceptable, and their support systems are pretty good. I'd be more cautious if I was buying used drives without original purchase receipt though.
I think Samsung only offer a 3 year warranty in comparison with WD 5 year, I'm sure someone will jump on me if I'm wrong.
