Crashes: GPUs, MOBO or PSU?

This is going on since my ASUS 5870 got back from RMA, because now I'm running crossfire, and I still haven't figured out where the problem is.

For testing I'm not using my PhysX card, an both 5870s are running on stock clocks.

I know it's not a problem with CPU overclock.

I've been using Stalker Clear sky, crysis and BFBC2 to test. Basically I just play the games until they crash, or leave me standing anywhere and go do something else, when I come back it's usually crashed.

When it crashes, sound goes on for a while, but the screen is frozen. If I hit keys one key on my keyboard, like numlock, it turns on but then the keyboard also stops responding. The computer hangs in that state until I shut it down. Fans on the GPUs don't spin faster.

Running both my cards on crossfire they crash after a while - it doesn't seem to be related to heat.

The thing is, when only one of my cards is connected, none of them crash, which seems to indicate everything is fine with each of them.

What leads me to think it's my motherboard, is because I've been having problems with it for a while now - sometimes when I'm turning on my computer it won't. The lights flashes on and fans starts to spin, but then it shuts down and repeats this process forever. What I do to fix is: turn off PSU, push ON button a few times, remove my MOBO power cable, push ON button a few times, put power cable back in, push ON button a few times, turn ON the PSU, and then it works. (I also don't know if this is a PSU or mobo problem.)

This is really taking a lot of my free time, when I'm testing and not actually having fun, but anyways, next thing I'm gonna do is try one card at a time with crossfire disabled.

TLDR; I'm so frustrated right now that I'm thinking of just RMAing everything: both 5870s (again), my mobo and my PSU. But this is gonna leave me without my rig for around two months...

So I appreciate any imputs.

Can't ask for rep remember don't want you getting into trouble with grumpy mods ;P

Have you tried different sets of drivers? I've seen a string of issues EXACTLY like this lately amongst people i talk to, it is very likely driver related. I wouldn't RMA anything without first doing a clean windows install and using the driver CD that came with the cards.

I think I would vote the motherboard as well. The problem is, the only way to conclusively isolate it would be to replace the board.

Barring that, what you could try doing is seeing if it is driver related by snagging a spare HD and fresh installing with a single GPU configuration. Try each card individually.

I had something like this which I narrowed down to the SLI configuration I had being extremely picky about which nVidia driver I could use which wouldn't barf on SLI.

Go figure. The cards, in my case, worked fine individually. But together? gaaah. Twas the drivers.

I would not rule out the mobo, though, until more testing is done.

I wasn't asking for REP, I was offering! (actually simply remembering about it, but you are right, it sounds diselegant) .

I have tried some different set of drivers, not many. I'll try more.

How's their RMA service quality? :/

Despite if it's something related to the drivers or my GPUs I will probably have to RMA this MOBO to get rid of the boot problem I described.

Wait a sec. I was thinking of a fresh install - although I made sure I cleaned every single bit of old drivers from my system before installing.
But after the fresh install, why shall I try each card individually again? I have already done that, and they seem to work fine - I mean, I couldn't get them to crash with testing.

I guess I'll start downloading drivers, or wait for the 11.8 to be released.

My overclock is stable. Buuuuuuut, even though it's stable, I have ran a few tests with everything on stock, thus making sure it's not the CPU.
I wish it was something as easy as fixing an overclock settings problem.

I remember reading EVGA's customer service was atrocious :/ i'm sure one of these guys would know more though
