First gaming build. Need advice.

Hey guys. I posted about two weeks ago, asking for some tips and whatnot. Well I was running that God-awful MSI AM3 motherboard, finally got myself a Sabertooth 990FX.

So everything that is in My Gaming PC spec's is what I am currently running. Now, I am pretty sure my WD Caviar Black 1TB can do 6gb, but when I try to run it in the 6gb sata port on the board, it doesn't say HDD - WD.... in the start up, it only says ODD- ..... about something else.

When I plug the Caviar Black into the 3gb port, it runs and in the start up in aqua it says HDD- WD.... And it starts up fine, Runs windows with no problems.

I have never ran Sata3, so I am kind of lost as to what I should be doing. All in all, Seems like a solid Mobo, and it look's killer. lol

I'm pretty sure the caviar black will not hit Sata III speeds, so I wouldn't worry about it. Just leave it in the 3 gb port

So why does it say right there SATA 6 Gb/s, SATA 3 Gb/s?

So if this wont hit Sata 3 speeds, what would I use Sata3 for? SSD? If so, what should I be looking for in an SSD. I'd like to be able to have the SSD just for Windows and a game or two. Would I be able to install games on my secondary drive (I'd be using the WD caviar black as the secondary drive) if there is not enough room on the SSD?

Sata III supports transfer speeds of 6gb/s. You need to look at the read/write speeds of your drive. The caviar black doesn't exceed the transfer rates of Sata II, so the listing of a Sata III connection is more of a marketing gimmick.

edit: correct, some ssd's have read/write speeds exceeding the transfer rate of Sata II, so in that situation, you would opt for a Sata III interface.

Also, you can indeed use your HDD for games, while using an SSD for the OS. For more on HDD's and SSD's, check out the hard drives an storage forum.

Ah ok, fair enough. I just mainly was wondering why it wouldn't run in the 6gb port's thats all. Can I run it in the 6gb port? I'd like to because it only has 2 3gb ports, I'd like to use them for my dokker hdd spot on the top of the case, and then my dvd drive. Any suggestions?

So you are suggesting a completely different motherboard, for a completely different processor? That makes NO sense.

tbh, I don't really know how to solve your particular problem, but you could try connecting one of your other drives to the Sata III port and see if you get the same problem as with your caviar black.
