Can I go from 2.8 to 4+ with this mobo and cpu?

Just wondering if I could reach 4 air cooled with this system:

MOBO: GA MA 790XT UD4P
CPU: Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition

3.6ghz is all I could get out of my x3 720 and that was on a GD70-790fx.

So then 3.6 on air? Would a jump from 2.8 to 3.6 make a huge difference in a music workstation?

1) Please don't bump your thread just minutes after your last post. I've deleted that premature bump.

2) Honestly, for a music production system, yeah the clock speeds are going to help (assuming you get it stable). Honestly though, I think you'd see far greater improvements in encoding speed if you went with a faster quad or x6 (or a Bulldozer 8 core). The differences won't be much, but if you're doing it as a job, then its certainly going to pay for itself.

But yes, going from 2.8GHz to 3.6GHz (assuming you get it stable), is a very nice jump in performance.

IIRC the max VCore and temp is 1.55v before the silicon degrades and 55c, respectively. So if you stay under those you should be ok. I wouldn't suggest running at 1.55v or 55c 24/7 though.

You likely won't reach 4; this is because the 720BE is a C2 revision as with all Phenom II x3s, C2 rev CPUs are known for usually maxing out around 3.8-3.9Ghz. But the motherboard is great for overclocking.

This. My 720 BE topped out at 3.7Ghz on my GD70 790FX. I run it at 3.5Ghz 24/7 with pretty cool temperatures on a 940 BE cooler. Like already mentioned the 720 BE chips are all C2 and although are pretty good overclockers and performers, they will rarely see 3.9-4Ghz+. On extreme cooling sure but for any air or water setup expect 3.5-3.6Ghz for average and 3.7-3.8Ghz at best.

To answer your question about the performance difference between 2.8Ghz and 3.6Ghz, absolutely you'll notice a difference. Especially when you dial in the NB speeds and RAM to maximize efficiency. Don't expect magic, but you will definitely notice an improvement.
